    Jan 27 2025

People have been doing it for years by following the YNAB method -- self-actualizing by aligning their spending with themselves. Now the YNAB team has come up with a word to describe it. It's not a budget, it's not a set of rules.

    It's spendfulness.

  • YNAB Method Overhaul... Not Really
    Jan 20 2025

The Four Rules are out... the Five Questions are in! Well... not really, the Four Rules have just been transformed and clarified. As Jesse has pointed out in prior podcasts, the Four Rules were really just one rule, the first rule -- Give Every Dollar a Job.

And that is still the master rule. To clarify what giving every dollar a job means, YNAB has come up with five questions:

    1. What does this money need to do before I’m paid again? (Reality)
    2. What larger, less frequent spending do I need to prepare for? (Stability)
    3. What can I set aside for next month’s spending? (Resilience)
    4. What goals, large or small, do I want to prioritize? (Creation)
    5. What changes do I need to make, if any? (Flexibility)

These five questions are designed to give you more clarity about what you want your money to do for you, and ultimately how you want to spend your live. In a word, how to live spendfully.

YNAB finally makes budgeting work

Before YNAB, I created budgets on paper, in envelopes, on spreadsheets, and in 2 other apps. I always just spent what I spent. This finally makes sense of my spending and it has allowed me to get almost 4 months ahead and close 6 savings accounts! Jesse's podcasts help me stay motivated and on track. Thanks, Jesse!

Weekly short simple talks about money and budgets

I'm a long time YNAB user and podcast listener. I like Jesse's easy going style and willingness to talk about whatever he's got on his mind that week. Some episodes might not directly apply to you, but there's usually some tidbit that makes you think about something a little differently than you did before,

His voice is soothing

I started listening to the podcasts in 2019. I listened from the first episode and slowly got caught up. The thing I like about Jesse Mecham and this podcast is the fact that he’s not yelling. He’s not yelling at me at what a crappy person I am for letting it get this badly and telling me I should have done this or that.

I wish I knew about the podcasts back when I started YNAB 4 (randomly saw it in Steam). The podcast would have helped me a lot because I finally realized I’m not the only one dealing with a ton of debt. The podcasts vary. He will have tips and advice on how to budget, stories that relate to budgeting, people come on the podcast and tell their stories and how they overcame in, random life updates (which I enjoy) and other things.

It’s definitely worth a listen :)
