Approximately 500 years BCE, the Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and he is not the same man.”

Times change. People change. Rules change.

Sometimes, the death of one person is lost in the flow. They are forgotten, overlooked, ignored.

The Same River Twice is a true crime podcast that looks deeper into one story at a time, to try to capture the moment of an event, the changes that have occurred since then, and -- most importantly -- to remember the person whose life was cut short.

Using court documents and public media from the time of the crime, we will share a detailed narrative of a case that faded from the headlines back in 1977. We want to create a sense of who the victim really was, to build a nuanced context around their life and death, and to understand why their loss matters, even after nearly 45 years.

We also want to examine the ways in which the system worked, and failed, for the victim and their loved ones. We want to understand the place of the perpetrator in the story, as well as what happened to them after the final judicial gavel sounded.

The Same River Twice podcast wants to tell as much of the story as we can, without sensationalism or voyeurism. Every life matters, and in true crime, every story deserves to be told.
