“It’s a tough match, we lost some balls without pressure. You have to control the ball and the tempo of the game. They didn’t do it but they really tried. They are really trying and they want this.

“They want this, the players want this, they don’t know how to get it that was my feeling.

“We will try to find a lot of things about the players, we will need a lot of time to work out these things.”

Manchester United 3 v Leicester City 0. Ruud : “I can only describe that moment, how I felt and as a closure of this block of four games, it felt like a closure and the future is open. That is the way I felt it. It was a beautiful moment to be able to share that with the supporters, it was special.

“What is important for me is that when I started as an interim at the beginning of this four-game period, it was to stabilise and continue playing what the players are used to 85 per cent and put in little tweaks or changing players and resting players.

“And that is where you start to get your own bit of identity in, try to get the confidence back. You could see the quality of the players, still not in a consistent way because there is a lot to improve, but there is a foundation in the last four games of strong unity, good spirit, players who were at it and looking for results and we got four.

Asked if it was goodbye, he added: “No, I felt like closing this period down and it was a moment, here and now and that was the beauty of the moment and where circumstances came together and it was a beautiful moment. Gratitude from my side to them and the reception I was able to receive was unbelievable.”

“It was an interim spell for a short term, it could have been one or two games, they kept me in the loop. It was four. For me, it was important to have that clarity.

“For me the most important thing is the football club and I am here to support that and I want to continue that. Also the communication was after the block of four, there will be communication. Expect to hear today or tomorrow on that.”

Manchester United 2 v PAOK Salonika 0. Ruud : “Amad made a difference today, because of his goals but he was very sharp. Well done to him, good game. Positionally we weren’t good in the first half. We were much better at that in the second half.

“He has been incredible in training, he always trains well and is asking me to do more.”

Van Nistelrooy added: “It was a pretty poor first half if I’m being nice. The second half way was better. That was clear. For me it was important to get results. I can only be happy with the performance that the players put in.

“Overall, I think the performance of the players was fantastic. They left their all out there on the pitch and in the end, of course, we settle for a draw.”

“[When we scored] it was a great moment, when you heard Old Trafford explode and in such an important moment. Bruno did really well taking the penalty and then the emotions come out.

West Ham United 2 v Manchester United 1. Ten Hag : “Clear and obvious isn’t how VAR worked. How they run their process. Before the season they explained the process of VAR – only when clear and obvious they should interfere. What they didn’t do against Spurs, that was a wrong decision. And now they make a wrong decision interfering and both have big impact on the games. I don’t criticise the personnel I criticise the process.”

“We created so many chances, played so good football, especially in the first half. How I want my team to play in and out of possession. I [counted] six, seven 100 per cent chances we should have scored. That is a point of improvement. But overall I had not so many criticisms of my team, apart from not scoring.”

“At this moment the luck is definitely not on our side. Last season was not different. Near the end we turned it around. We are so determined it will be the same case today. We have to turn this around and it will turn around if we keep playing like we are now – Brentford, Fenerbahce, today we played really good football.”

Manchester United 2 v Brentford 1. Ten Hag : “Every game you win is important, you see the togetherness, the fighting spirt and we add some determination to score goals. The stats show we play good football, come in good spots, and do not score enough but today we scored two brilliant goals.”

“This team has the capacity to score very good goals and when you score and win you add some confidence. The start of the season we had some good performances. We had chances but didn’t score enough and then everyone is negative. It can help us but it is only one win and we must build on this.

“The pressure is always there. We have to win every game and when you are 1-0 down, you have to see how we turned it around. We felt some injustice and used it is as fuel. I really enjoyed the performance.”
