  • Ramona la mona capuchina
    Feb 2 2025

Today celebrates 5 years of Simple Stories in Spanish! In honor of its 5th anniversary, I have decided to retell one of my favorite stories from season 1. This story was inspired by the capuchin monkeys that I saw all over Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica.

Who doesn’t enjoy a day at the beach? Ramona certainly does. She goes to the beach every day and watches all the tourists. But Ramona isn’t just anybody, she is a capuchin monkey and is very famous for her thieving ways.

This story is in the third person and the present tense. Important vocabulary in the story includes: “playa” (beach), “arena” (sand), “comida” (food), and “mono” (monkey).

No matter where you are in your language journey, stories will help you on your way. You can find a transcript of the story and read along at https://smalltownspanishteacher.com/2025/02/02/simple-stories-in-spanish-ramona-la-mona-capuchina/

A fresh new approach to language learning.

So fun! Textbook learning is so much more boring than listening to these stories. The clear, careful diction of the narration makes each word in the stories audible. In addition, the transcripts are all available online, which makes following along possible. These stories really give the language a personality. Definitely worth the listen if you are at an intermediate learning stage.

Great for intermediate Spanish!

Great for anyone who has broad Spanish vocabulary but doesn’t have anyway to practice. Will definitely take you from beginner to intermediate. The stories are funny and entertaining and give you chance to understand words by their context.

This is a fun story.

I'm not much passed day 1 of Spanish 1, so I can't understand much yet. With the notes, I could understand all of the first story.

Good stories to help learn Spanish!

I like this podcast to help me grow my vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension in Spanish. I think it's great for beginner to intermediate learners.

Some reviews complain about her pronunciation. I think it's better to think of it as her English accent. She's not a native Spanish speaker, so if you're looking to really improve your pronunciation and lose your accent, it might be better to find a story podcast with native speakers (I like Duolingo's podcast for this).

But there is value in having simple stories told in a slow, clear pace to help auditory comprehension, vocab, and grammar. I listen to these stories before bed, and they're really lovely to fall asleep to. :-)

Not an easy listen

I love the idea here and see it as truly valuable, but did not enjoy the performance. I found it difficult to listen to and wanted it to be over. Great concept though. Having done Duo Lingo for so long I have come to expect better pronunciation and this fell short.

Great idea, good stories, painful pronunciation.

The pronunciation is nothing short of cringeworthy, kudos to her for trying this, but I'm new to Spanish and I can't even deal with it. Better to have a native speaker or viable pronunciation.
