  • In Focus: Ensuring a Just Transition for Seafarers
    Nov 8 2024

Shipping has ambitious targets to decarbonise but it will only be able to reach those goals with the help of those who operate the vessels – seafarers.

When it comes to decarbonisation in shipping much of the talk is around new technology, engines and the availability of alternative fuels. But for these alternative fuelled vessels to work there is a very vital piece of the puzzle – trained crews to operate them. The key role of the seafarer in shipping’s decarbonisation voyage led to the formation of the Maritime Just Transition Task Force.

In this latest In Focus episode of the Seatrade Maritime Podcast you will be hearing more about the Maritime Just Transition Task Force from two of its members. Joining us today on the Seatrade Maritime Podcast are Kulsoom Jafri, Lead Campaigner, Seafarers and Inland Navigation International Transport Workers' Federation and Arvind Natrajan, Senior Manager, Marine Department, International Chamber of Shipping.

In a conversation between Kulsoom, Arvind, and Marcus Hand Editor of the Seatrade Maritime News you will hear about:

    • What is the Just Transition
    • The formation of the Maritime Just Transition Task Force
    • The scale of decarbonisation and training needs that have to be tackled
    • Key areas addressed by the taskforce and achievements to date

  • In Focus: Shaft line innovations with Wӓrtsilӓ Shaft Line Solutions
    Oct 30 2024

In the second episode of our series with Wärtsilä Shaft Line Solutions, Thomas Pauly General Manager, future portfolio and market intelligence, and Henrik Lundgren, General Manager, new technologies and systems architecture delve into more detail on the Next Level Shaft Line Solutions range with host and Seatrade Maritime News correspondent, Gary Howard.

The conversation begins with a look at how Wärtsilä Shaft Line Solutions gathers feedback from customers on their wants, needs, and challenges along the shaft line, and the methods the company uses to turn that data into prioritised input for product development with a direct impact on product specifications.

Exploring some of the outputs of that process, the guests discuss Wärtsilä Shaft Line Solutions’s products in greater detail, along with the operational and commercial benefits of each technology.

Thomas covers the 35-year history of the Wärtsilä Airguard Seal, the benefits of having everything from rubber production to R&D and testing in-house, and the product’s evolution to the 10-year Airguard Seal.

Henrik shares his expertise on the IntelliSafe bearing and the extended lifecycle it offers, along with a real world example of how the bearing’s amber alarm helped crew on a large oil tanker to identify a minor shaft line issue that would otherwise have gone unnoticed until the problem had worsened.

Tune in to the episode for these and further insights into Wärtsilä’s Shaft Line Monitoring Equipment and EvoTube concept. Visit the Wärtsilä website for more information on its Next Level Shaft Line Solutions.
