Raising Resilience: Indigenous Motherhood in Modern America

  • Summary

  • Today I interviewed McKenzie Loffer who is a proud member of the Muscogee-Creek tribe. McKenzie is a mom to two young children and chats all about indigenous motherhood and the importance of raising your children within their respective cultures. Me and McKenzie chat a lot about how motherhood is viewed differently within the Native American community and the sanctity surrounding birth and motherhood. Today's conversation focuses a lot on inclusivity and not being afraid to stand out, be different, and accept your roots.

"Reproduction on the Reservation"-By looking deeply at one tribal nation over more than a century, Theobald offers an especially rich analysis of how Indigenous women experienced pregnancy and motherhood under evolving federal Indian policy. At the heart of this history are the Crow women who displayed creativity and fortitude in struggling for reproductive self-determination.

"Motherhood So White"-Motherhood So White is the story of Nefertiti's fight to create the family she always knew she was meant to have and the story of motherhood that all American families need now. In this unflinching account of her parenting journey, Nefertiti examines the history of adoption in the African American community, faces off against stereotypes of single, Black motherhood, and confronts the reality of raising children of color in racially charged, modern-day America.
