• The Value of Styling
    Oct 15 2024

Hi, everyone, this is Liz Hart, back again at Pivot Point: Success is a Journey. I thought I'd come on here really quick and talk a little bit about a question I got recently about the value of styling. As some of you know, if you're longtime listeners, hey, thank you. If you're a new listener, I want to welcome you to Pivot Point: Success is a Journey, which is a part of Tailored for Success, the nonprofit that I started 23 years ago. We work with job seekers who are looking for business clothing and career development resources. One of the things that we do is we distribute free business clothing to women and men who are going on interviews, starting internships, or new jobs. I got a question recently. I was being interviewed for a book that a colleague is writing, which is an honor and very humbling. One of the questions was the value of styling. I thought about it a little bit, and I thought, it's one thing to provide individuals with clothing- and it's very important that people are clothing insecure, that they get the clothing that they need- however, there is something to be said for working one on one with a trained stylist or a volunteer who is there to help you project the best image possible on an interview or when starting a new job. There's something about helping to build someone's confidence that way. It's just immeasurable and invaluable. I have a volunteer who works in one of my career closets on Wednesdays. Her name is Amanda, and she is a professional image consultant. When she works with a client, the client gets so much more than they would than just with myself or another volunteer. They get the knowledge of someone who has been in the industry of dressing people and making them look their best and looking at their body types and making sure that they're dressing for the body types. They get the value of all of that. I'm making this recording because I just want to encourage people if they are in the job search- and maybe they've been out of the job market for a while- and they're thinking about coming into one of the career closets at Tailored for Success, I encourage you to do it. We all need boosts of self-esteem every once in a while, and certainly coming into one of our career closets, whether it's working with Amanda in Woburn or someone else in Cambridge, you get to boost your self-esteem. And I think we all need that. And certainly, job seekers need it because job searching is tough. But if you can take a little time out of your busy day of trying to find employment and going on interviews and networking, and visit a career closet and get a boost of self-esteem, I highly recommend you do that. And I hope you come to see us soon. I will put in the show notes our locations and days that you can come and visit us. And Tailored for Success is a nonprofit, so everything is free. So, what do you have to lose?
