The Niagara Murder - Canadian True Crime Story
News of the Times Episode 350 | 1890
In 1890, Canada was fending off what it perceived as influx of immigrants who had come only to be involved in crime.
Enter Regnald Birchall and wife, a once promising student, sports enthusiast, and sketch artist turned committed gambler and con artist.
In a previous ploy: he and his wife as Lord and Lady Somerset, ran up as many bills as they could feasibly do before they were caught, then they made good their escape.
His latest ploy: convince people of prosperous farm opportunities in Canada. Bring them over and then…what to do with them once he has extracted their money?
This story captivated both the Canadian and English press and public. In England, large rooms fitted with a telegraph were created so that paying public could listen to the latest telegrams from Canda regarding the details of the murder.
Within Canda, the whole of the town came to a standstill as people came from miles around to force their way into the courthouse to watch the drama unfold.
We look at the background, the crime, and the aftermath of the Niagara Murder in today’s episode of Frightful Fridays.
To our Canadian friends, belated Happy Canada Day!
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

Astounding American True Tales Of Crime
News of the Times Episode 349 | 1929-1930
In today’s episode it is 1929 to 1930 Texas.
Coming across one of the stories in our research, we were astounded – and we are hardened long time crime researchers! This then led us on to more stories – all from Texas and all around the same time!
The stories include a man carrying on an affair who attempts to blow up his wife and children. It is his 4th attempt to kills his wife and his patience is running thin. Her body parts had to be scraped off buildings.
Other stories include the 1930’s version of a Miss Universe contestant attempting to kill her bigamous husband,
a sailor who has left a death trail around the world. Some people collect fridge magnets from each place they visit – he apparently killed in each port.
There is also a lawyer who, upon finding out of his daughter’s secret marriage, kills her new husband and then believes he should get off based on old Texas law.
And we have the young woman, with her friends, who finds out her boyfriend is cheating on her and does her best to both humiliate and punish him - harshly.
A round robin of what we think are astounding cases from Texas is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

The Remarkable Case of William Chester Minor: The Lambeth Tragedy
News of the Times Episode 348 | 1872
1872 Lambeth and a man, on his way to work in the early morning hours to the local brewery, is chased, shot, then repeatedly stabbed by an unknown assailant. A policeman on his beat nearby hears the shots and catches up with the assailant, American William Chester Minor.
Yale graduate, doctor in the American civil war, eventually achieving the rank of Captain and coming from a good family in the United States, William Chester Minor would not seem to be the kind of person who would kill an unknown victim.
What transpires is an interesting case of a man encouraged by his family to travel abroad, with known mental health issues.
William Chester Minor, one of the newer inmates in the relatively new Broadmoor Prison for the Criminally Insane, also became famous for being one of the most prolific contributors to the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary with his contributions running into the thousands.
We take a look at the background, the crime and the end of the life of the remarkable William Chester Minor in today’s episode of Murderous Mondays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.
