The Victorian Murder Case of Wormwood Scrubs
News of the Times Episode 411 | 1893
In today’s episode it is 1893, London. Victorian England still remembers the ripper as the police divisions as a whole attempt to recover from the disastrous reputation garnered from the recognised botched handling of those gruesome murders.
One evening, outside one of London’s prison walls, in a wasteland called “the Scrubs”, the body of a young woman is found. Her head has been literally bashed in on one side with fragments of skull dotting the ground and splintered into her head. Her throat has marks upon them as if having been stomped upon by a boot.
Her time of death is easily established as the ground under her is dry whereas it had rained late in the evening. Questions are asked as to the whereabouts of the constable who was supposed to be patrolling that area around the time of the murder.
This case exploded across the papers making many a national paper headline. The shock of a potential constable murderer, who was murdering on his actual police rounds, was both shocking and controversial. The viciousness of the attack upon the young woman further increased the salacious nature of the crime.
We take a look at the background, the crime and the capture.
For those who like the creepy, take a look at this week’s further particulars story. We are quite certain it must have taken years for her to sleep with the lights off….
