  • Episode 6-My nation is a vineyard
    Apr 1 2024

Indeed, the great rabbis once compared to Jewish people to a vineyard. When cultivated and watered, we grow and give forth the fruit of the vine. As it is true today where even amidst the horrors and sorrows of war, the Jewish people have come together around the latest existential threat in order to rise to the challenge and defy our enemies.
The spring season is upon us and as I travel to the Sommelier wine festival in Tel Aviv, I wrestle with the excitement of seeing friends and colleagues, while also struggling with the surrounding political reality. And so I will drink to remember every fallen soul and those kidnapped to Gaza, and I will drink in praise of my nation that has risen to face our enemies in defiance of tyranny.
I say Lchayim with a conviction that reminds me, to remind others, that it’s an honor that we’re drinking together in the land and in the vineyards that our elders have cultivated throughout the ages.

Wine and War: A Toast to “Israel's Past and Hopes for Its Future”, a poignant and heartfelt tribute to the complex tapestry of Israel's history, as seen through the eyes of Amir Katz, the son of a veteran. This narrative delves into the raw realities of conflict, recounting a deeply personal account of my father, a tank commander during the Yom Kippur war. This story seeks to paint a picture of the challenges faced by a nation, shining a light to the resilience of the Israeli people in the face of adversity.

Amidst the shadows of war and loss, on can find solace in the rituals of life, particularly in the ritual around wine-drinking. For us, wine becomes more than a mere beverage; it becomes a vessel for remembrance and homage. Each sip embodies a memory, a tribute to the sacrifices made by fathers, sons, sisters, and mothers who never returned home. Through such narratives, we invite readers on a profound journey, not only through the landscapes of Israel but also through the depths of our own emotions.

Our role as a guide has us shouldering the weight of history and the dreams of a brighter tomorrow.

  • Episode 4-Kosher complexities and great wine
    Jul 24 2023

Join us for an enthralling episode of "Kosher complexities and great wine," as we delve into the world of fine wines, culture, and personal dilemmas. In this captivating installment, our host, Amir, takes us on a journey through his unique experience of growing up with great French wines, untouched by the notion of Kosher, to becoming an essential figure in both the Kosher and non-Kosher wine worlds in Israel.

Amir's life takes an intriguing twist when he finds himself working in both the religiously sacred Kosher wine industry and the secular non-Kosher world. As a guide and wine connoisseur, he now faces the challenge of providing exceptional experiences to his guests, some of whom strictly adhere to drinking the Kiddush holy Kosher wine, a special and distinct type of wine with profound religious significance.

In this episode, Amir artfully balances the delicate scales between his appreciation for Kosher traditions and his reverence for the world of exquisite non-Kosher wines. The conflicting demands of his work and personal preferences pose a thought-provoking contrast in the context of religious and secular circles.

Amir shares his heartfelt homage to Kosher wines, respecting their historical and spiritual importance in the lives of many, while also candidly admitting his affinity for non-Kosher wines. As he discusses the intricacies of enjoying Kosher wine in religious settings and partaking in non-Kosher wine in secular gatherings, we gain a deeper understanding of his internal struggles and the complexity of these decisions.

Throughout the episode, Amir, along with his special guests, Shlomi from France and Sion from Yehoshalayim, indulge in the pleasure of breaking bread together, opening bottles of wine, sampling, pouring, tasting, and engaging in stimulating conversations. As they savor each sip, they embark on a journey of understanding the nuances that make each wine unique, appreciating the stories behind the vines, and sharing their personal experiences.

While Amir doesn't claim to be strictly religious, his quest to navigate the world of Kosher and non-Kosher wines symbolizes a broader theme of respecting traditions while embracing diversity. This podcast episode offers a heartwarming and insightful exploration of Amir's personal and professional growth, encapsulating the beauty of cherishing heritage and the allure of embracing change.

Tune in to "Uncorked Passions" as Amir, the grandson of Ecommerceion, unravels the delicate, sometimes challenging obstacle of being a Hebrew who embraces both religious and secular experiences, all while relishing the profound delights of wines that unite us across cultures.
