    Oct 21 2024

Jackie Chan is an action movie legend known for his death-defying stunts and laugh-out-loud comedy. With his use of props and rhythmic comedic timing, Chan's brand of physical comedy is unmistakable. One of his most praised films is 1985's "Police Story," which he also directed. On today's episode of the podcast, Pat Mitchell and I chat about this beloved classic, delve into Jackie Chan's upbringing and background in the business, and discuss the celebrated stunt work in the movie. We'll explain why it's so unique and thrilling even decades after the film's release.

Patrick Mitchell is a film content creator who usually focuses on horror and true crime -- but he happens to be a massive Jackie Chan fan, too.

  • McFly's Movie List: Favourite Directorial Debuts #027
    Oct 7 2024

Watching a filmmaker's directorial debut is a wonderful way to see how their creative seeds are planted early in their careers. These movies can introduce a director's style and serve as a foundation for themes they'll expand upon later. My favorite directorial debuts offer fresh perspectives and challenge regular cinematic conventions. On today's episode of McFly's Movie House, Declan Adams and I will chat about our personal favorites, discussing what makes our selections so unique.

Declan Adams is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker and writer, currently working primarily in music videos and aspiring to direct his first feature film.

  • Honing In On the Old and New with Peter Bogdanovich's Targets with Bryan Starr #026
    Sep 30 2024

Peter Bogdanovich's 1968 film "Targets" is an exhilarating debut that stars the legendary Boris Karloff as a fading horror icon who crosses paths with a deranged sniper in Los Angeles. Loosely inspired by the 1966 Charles Whitman mass shooting, "Targets" is chilling and utterly jarring — a horror movie set in broad daylight. In this episode, Bryan Starr and I discuss Bogdanovich's film, career, and background while highlighting the shift in Tinseltown from Old Hollywood to New. We'll also explore why "Targets" makes an excellent double feature with Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," unearthing thematic parallels and the commentary on the relationship between violence and pop culture/media.

Bryan Starr is a talented filmmaker and content creator. While he has run Bryan Starr Cinematography for seven years, Bryan started creating content in 2020. Thanks to his film collection of over 3,000 titles, he has built himself up as a leader in the community who champions physical media.

  • A Timebomb of Self-Discovery: Decoding Agnès Varda's Cleo from 5 to 7 #024
    Sep 16 2024

Agnès Varda's "Cléo from 5 to 7" is an iconic piece of cinema from the French New Wave movement. The film follows Cléo in "real-time" as she awaits biopsy results from five to seven pm, taking us on a journey of self-discovery. While it initially explores the fears associated with mortality, it ultimately highlights themes of isolation and loneliness. A timeless film on self-identity and the public persona, "Cléo from 5 to 7" reflects Varda's feminist sensibilities and offers a refreshing and introspective cinematic experience. In today's episode, I'm joined by podcaster and journalist Ethan Simmie to discuss this classic, highlighting Varda's significant contributions to the French New Wave movement and her background.

Ethan Simmie is a Senior Film Critic for AgentsOfFandom.com, host of two podcasts (The Movie Draft Podcast & 24 Minutes of A24), and host of the YouTube channel Movies Are So Back. He has attended NYFF, SXSW, Sundance, and SIFF through his contributions to the industry.
