    Dec 19 2024

If you love J.R.R. Tolkien, the Christmas season, or both, this episode is for you! Tolkien, a devout Catholic and master storyteller, wrote beautifully about Christmas in his personal letters—sharing memories, reflections, and even festive notes written in his own invented languages.

  • 190: Why and How The Lord of the Rings is a "Religious and Catholic Work"
    Dec 12 2024

JRR Tolkien described The Lord of the Rings as a "fundamentally religious and Catholic work." When this statement isn't outright ignored, it's wildly misunderstood. John Carswell of the Tolkien Road podcast joins me to explore how and why The Lord of the Rings is indeed a religious work.

Good short form Tolkien review podcast

If you are a casual Tolkien fan this podcast will help you better grasp the "Tolkien universe" (Legendarium) of Middle-Earth and beyond. I think it might also make reading some of the other books (besides The Hobbit and LOTR) more appealing and less daunting. My only criticism is that if you're a well read Tolkien fan, these podcasts will not offer much in the way of new insights. If you're a super nerd you will also be annoyed by mispronounced names at times as well as the apologetic tone for deep dives into things only hard-core fans will love (don't apologize for quoting Bilbo's poetry!). That said, even for the well read fan these short episodes are great for quick reviews of vignettes from the 1st and 2nd Age. And while there is not a ton of new insights, there are some.

Great Podcast Review Headline

Move this podcast to the TOP- it’s great! These books are entirely inspiring. The movies have been captivating. The Amazon series might need some backstory… look no further!

There’s a good chance you haven’t read The Silmarillion… If you haven’t, you’ve been waiting (a long time) for a lore time-saver… this podcast will do that for you. If you have read it, darkness falters before your light, and you want to listen to the Lore of the Rings Podcast for addition details he has pulled together on foundational themes. My favorite line so far is on the topic of reading The Silmarillion…. Read it once and get a high level view, twice and you can follow the main characters and peoples in a more cohesive narrative, three times, four (blah blah), on the fifth reading you can host a podcast!

- I am no man :)
