  • 4. Diabetes didn't stop me. It shouldn't stop you either.
    Oct 20 2020

I've been living with Type 1 Diabetes for 13 years now. I was diagnosed after a short and brutal deterioration period, and I remember asking myself: now what? What will my life look like from now on? I had all these dreams of a future full of adventures, and now I would have to give up on it?

In today's episode, Estelle and I will talk about what it’s like to have an active life and go on adventures with a condition such as Type 1 Diabetes. We will first explain what it is and how it affects the everyday life of people who have it. So, even if you're not familiar with the condition, we hope that you will enjoy learning what living with diabetes means. It’s cool for your general knowledge and it will come in handy if you ever meet someone who has it.

Then, we'll jump to the crunchy part where we’ll tell you how we monitor my health in the context of our rather crazy lifestyle. We love to go on adventures and by this, we mean “Physically demanding trips, off the beaten path, that are full of uncertainty.” We’ll talk about tools, habits, tips, and give you examples of everything you should NOT do with anecdotes of our previous adventures in China, Australia, or the US where things got very stressful pretty fast.

Finally, we’ll tell you from our experience how you can involve your partner and get their support in monitoring your health.

We're making today the episode I would have loved to listen to back when I was 14 and when my only question was: will I be able to?

    Enjoy the story!

  • 3. Lessons of the Wild West (Part 2)
    Sep 8 2020
Imagine a place where kids still grow up to become cowboys, where people live among wolves, and where losing a relative to a bear is something you should rightly worry about. Estelle and her sister Magaly tell us the story of their adventure in the Wild Canadian West. Far from being a regular outdoors experience, they discovered a world where the unexpected is the norm. It is a story in two parts about grit, solidarity, and self-awareness where the laws of nature apply to all animals. Humans included. In this second and last part, things go south. British Columbia declares the state of emergency because of major wildfires raging in the region. The airport from which Estelle and Magaly were supposed to fly back home gets destroyed, so the decision becomes obvious: stay, and take part in the fight.  You'll discover the behind the scenes of a community's battle against nature's most dangerous forces and you'll experience the (very) surprising turns this story took.  Enjoy the show!
