  • Summary

  • Kabuliwala is probably the most popular short story written by Nobel Laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore.

It narrates a fictional story of an Afghan trader Rehman, Kabuliwala, in the city of Kolkatta. He meets a young girl named Mini about the age of his own daughter and the two become best friends. They make their own games and fill the air with laughter around them.

Until one day, Rehman gets into a fight with someone and is taken away by the police. The day of his return from prison is the day when Mini is getting married and she struggles to even recognize him. This reminds Rehman of his own daughter and how he has missed her entire childhood.

It was the day of Mini's wedding. Everyone was running out to complete the preparations for the occasion when suddenly they have a surprise visitor. The narrator's initial reaction was to shun him away as soon as possible but seeing his love for Mini, he asked her to come down and meet him once. Rehman struggled to recognize her as he still thought Mini was a small girl.

This made Rehman realize that his own daughter would also have grown up while he was away and he has missed her childhood and will need to learn new ways to engage her. Recognizing the pain of a father, the narrator gave Rehman some money so he can return back to his home in Kabul by compromising on some wedding arrangements.

Rehman would narrate the stories of his land to the narrator and tell him how life is different in Afghan than in Kolkata. Also, Mini's mother is quite skeptical of the safety of her child from this outsider due to his looks and his native background.
