Is it actually recyclable? Find out with tips from Sustainability Expert & Founder of Source Beauty, Maggie Spicer | ep. 52

  • Summary

  • Today I’m chatting with Maggie Spicer, founder of Source Beauty, about how to navigate the world of sustainability from understanding marketing claims to finally getting a simple approach to at-home recycling, we cover a lot in under an hour.

I’ve been trying to figure out sustainability as a consumer and creator for awhile now. To say that it's a complex issue would be an understatement which is why I'm so excited to share this episode.

Maggie, a sustainability/supply chain expert and trusted voice that has supported brands, retailers and other organizations for over a decade, has an incredible way of distilling this complicated topic down into easy tips that will take the guesswork out of trying to be more sustainable.

In this episode we talk about:

    • How consumer demand for sustainable and socially responsible products is driving the need for brands to substantiate their sustainability claims and prioritize responsible business practices.
    • The challenges of recycling beauty product packaging, including the impact of size, material, and design on recyclability
    • The importance of certifications and the need for clear, authentic, and substantiated claims in the beauty industry to ensure transparency and build consumer trust
    • The complexity of sustainability and the need for consumers to ask questions, seek information, and engage in informed decision-making
    • What to look for from a brand to determine whether the sustainability claims they’re making are actually meaningful or just marketing
    • What to ask a brand, literally almost a short script or prompt, to get the information you need before investing in their product
    • And this is the big one, real talk about how to recycle makeup and skincare empties. Spoiler alert: just because you see ‘recyclable’ on a product page does NOT mean that container or component packaging can be tossed in your recycling bin. Maggie breaks down and simplifies how to approach it so we’re not “wishcycling”

If you’ve been overwhelmed in the past trying to figure out how to responsibly purchase and dispose of products, this one is for you.
