Is Getting a Masters in Special Education Worth It? My answer is that it depends on your circumstances! In this episode I talk about my own experience going through a masters in special education program. Topics covered are methods, networking, the slight pay bump, and cost.

As a teacher I have taught in California which is a historical blue state and Arizona which is a historical red state. I want to share my observations as a teacher of color, working in special education in both of these states. I will be going over differences in state standards , funding, general vibes, unions, and talking about Critical Race Theory.

I also talk about how autism is viewed by other society currently. I talk about growing up and building my skills and capacity and self-identify.

Critical Race Theory has been a hot topic in education and politically all of 2020 up until present day (March 2022). In this episode I talk about the context of the term " Critical Race Theory" which I refer to as CRT during the episode for short. I speak about different points of views parents might be concerned about and the impact it has on our students. Who are the people that have time for this and why are they upset? My overall take is that there is some degree of empathy and self awareness that we need in order to talk about the root problems!

The line between English Language Learners (ELL) and Special Education Students (SPED) is blurred at times. It is difficult for parents and staff to keep track of all the changes and make sense of what they mean. I believe that there is much work to be done in the area of helping students that are classified as ELL and SPED and improving the instruction given to them.

English Language Learner( E.L.L ) programs are supposed to be designed to support students in learning English. The problem is that many E.L.L students only know English and the "support" they are receiving is low quality and doesn't help them grow in the areas they need support in. All of this can be avoided by marking that English is the only language spoken at home when enrolling your child into school.

As a mild/moderate special education teacher, I talk about how the majority of learning disabilities, I work with are not visually apparent. I also talk about how people with disabilities, hide their disabilities in order to fit in and not have to justify their disability. I also talk about destigmatize mental health care and how people experiencing a mental health episode are treated with violence by the hands of law enforcement instead of care. This episode is my current understanding on the matter and I welcome all feed back
