  • Why Van Jones sees AI as the ultimate disruptor
    Oct 21 2024
In this episode of Financial Freestyle with Ross Mac, Mac sits down with none other than New York Times bestselling author, Dream Machine Innovation Lab founder, and CNN contributor Van Jones. Jones reflects on his father’s sacrifices to lift their family out of poverty, as well as his early career as a lawyer in the Bay Area fighting for civil rights. “I was the first person to use a relational computer database attached to a hotline to track problem officers, precincts, and practices in the nineties. Back when that was considered really radical and also very technologically forward.” Today, Jones continues to view technology as a powerful tool for change. His latest focus as the founder of the Dream Machine Innovation Lab is on using AI technology to create opportunities for overlooked communities. While AI is still somewhat misunderstood and seen as a threat to jobs, Jones counters, “AI is not [going to] replace you. Somebody [who] knows how to use AI is [going to] replace you. Is the most important thing that we can come away with because that gives people a reason to look at the stuff,” Jones continues. “Rather than thinking about it like the Terminator, think about it like C-3PO or R 2-D2.” When asked why he’s so focused on AI, Jones put it simply: “99% of Black people don't know anything about AI… And 99% of white folk don't either... which means this is the first time you're ever [going to] experience something called equality. Okay. We're all equally ignorant about new stuff.” The level playing field, according to Jones, is a chance to disrupt the status quo and drive meaningful change. “So that's my, that's, that's my passion. And when I look at this next generation that's coming up, I just see nothing but genius, magic, and opportunity, said Jones. • How a woman's quest for financial freedom lead to a budding career
    Oct 14 2024
In this episode of Financial Freestyle with Ross Mac, personal finance educator, author, and podcaster Jamila Souffrant joins the show to share her experience in the corporate workforce, her financial "aha" moment, and her journey to entrepreneurship. Jamaican-born Jamila Souffrant followed what she thought was the American dream: attending school, graduating, and starting her corporate career. But something felt off. “I realized very early in my career that I wasn't happy with a nine-to-five [job] or having a long commute,” says Souffrant. “I didn't want to be a slave to the commute or to an office, which prompted me to look into personal finance.” Her curiosity led her to the FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) movement. Souffrant dove into “priming” her commutes by consuming financial podcasts and reading articles when she could. She soon embraced the FIRE movement, managing to save $169,000 in just two years with her husband, while documenting the experience on her blog, Journey to Launch. “I really didn't start Journey to Launch with the idea that it would one day be my vehicle to ride out while I'm on the journey still to financial independence. But… there was a voice missing,” Souffrant explained. She created a blog, “Journey to Launch,” document her quest for financial independence. “And that's when I decided, let me start sharing my journey in a blog first and then realized the podcast was a better format for me… I just slow started to share my ideas, share my journey, what I was doing and that to started to catch a hold.” For those pursuing financial freedom, Souffrant advises, “It really takes being honest with yourself about what's important to you and what you're willing to give up permanently or just in the meantime until you get to your goals.” Financial Freestyle with Ross Mac on Yahoo Finance is dedicated to promoting economic prosperity for all. • How 'Earn Your Leisure' is changing the financial literacy game
    Oct 7 2024
This week on Financial Freestyle with Ross Mac, Ross interviews Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings, co-hosts of the Earn Your Leisure podcast and creators of Invest Fest, a fresh take on financial conferences. Childhood friends from the Bronx, Millings and Bilal started on different career paths—Millings as a teacher and Bilal as a financial adviser—but came together with a shared passion for education. What began as an effort to educate kids in the classroom evolved into a show that highlights entrepreneurial stories and diverse career paths, offering financial literacy to a broad audience. As they learned, so did their community, which soon looked to Earn Your Leisure as a trusted source of financial education. Building on the podcast's success, Bilal and Millings reimagined traditional financial conferences with Invest Fest, infusing culture and fun into the experience to create an annual signature event. Their goal is to offer something different from standard business conferences, moving away from small breakout rooms to something more dynamic. • Serial entrepreneur Carolyn Aronson's best advice for new business owners
    Sep 9 2024
Starting your own business is something many people dream of. Being an entrepreneur has its rewards, but it doesn't come without its challenges as well. In this episode of "Financial Freestyle with Ross Mac," It's a 10 Haircare CEO and founder Carolyn Aronson discusses her journey in entrepreneurship and some of the important factors to creating a successful business. Aronson started her career as a hairdresser, then owned a salon and became an entrepreneur. "It was really a progressive career that just evolved into more things," Aronson says. "So really talking about growing the roots, that is absolutely such a key factor to any business for it to really have longevity," Aronson explains. "A problem with entrepreneurs sometimes," is that "they actually try to do too much by themselves and too fast." Becoming a successful entrepreneur can be challenging. Aronson discusses some of the key aspects that can help make a successful entrepreneur. "The determination and grit is one thing. But having the ability to stay the course and to withstand time is a whole other thing... I think that really to be within the top 1 or 2%, it's a whole different mindset... It's more than just persistence, perseverance, all the Ps." Aronson explains that "the people that are in the top few percent just don't think the same. We think outside of the box, we think really, really big... We don't have the average fear." A piece of advice Aronson gives is "don't listen, don't listen to your doubters. Don't listen to the people who tell you you can't or you won't. And ultimately, think about the possibilities. So always think big, but also basically dot your i's, cross your t's." "So much of success is really what you learn along the way because you're constantly learning," Aronson adds. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
