The hurricane rapidly intensified from a tropical depression to a Category 5 storm in just over 48 hours, setting a record for the fastest intensification in the Atlantic.

- At least nine deaths have been reported across the state.
- Over 3.3 million utility customers lost power.
- Approximately 11 million people were at risk of flooding.
- More than 125 homes were destroyed, many in senior citizen communities.
