  • Episode 57: Dark Empire
    Aug 28 2024

We're back in the Star Wars mines for this episode, eschewing Disney canon in favor of the classic and iconic (although maybe not for the right reasons) Dark Horse series Dark Empire. Oh, and we subjected Chad to it as well!

Next, on Crying in the Book Club: The crew checks out the classic Alan Moore series From Hell.

  • Episode 56: Traveling to Mars
    Aug 14 2024

We're back! And this episode, we're reading a comic from one of our favorite contemporary writers, or at least one of our most-referenced, Mark Russell. Traveling to Mars may be the most contemporary series we've covered, an 11-issue epic following a terminal cancer patient's journey to become the first human to set foot on the red planet, and claim it for the Easy Beef Corporation. Along the way we get some robot shenanigans, one man's critical appraisal of his life, and the beautiful story of a fish called Leroy Brown.

Next, on Crying in the Book Club: We're heading to a galaxy far, far and away for the comic that inspired everyone's favorite Star Wars movie: Dark Empire.

  • Episode 54: Gunjo
    Jun 26 2024

We're closing out Pride Month with a classic Emily-core pick in Gunjo, a toxic yuri manga about two lesbians who fucking hate each other. But also love each other. And also commit all kinds of crimes. I would call it fun but it's actually grim and sorta depressing.

Next, on Crying in the Book Club: We're going back to the X-Men for God Loves, Man Kills

  • Episode 53: The Pervert
    Jun 12 2024

We're kicking off pride month with one of the best queer comics of the last decade: The Pervert. Chad's here, so we're reuniting the lineup that initially heaped praise on Michelle Perez and Remy Boydell's graphic novel way back when it originally came out.

Next, on Crying in the Book Club: We take our first foray into toxic yuri with Gunjo.

  • Episode 51: Runamay 2, Part 1
    May 8 2024

It's May in the book club (and everywhere else, I suppose?) and you know what that means: it's time to return to Marvel Comics' best team of all time, the GOATs of teenage superheroes: The Runaways. This episode, we read the first 12 issues of BKV and Adrian Alphona's second volume of Runaways, and discuss all the teenage angst that comes with the territory. Also: Jean-Luc found a sick forum from 2005 where they talk about Runaways and reports back. Also also: We find out which hosts have experienced sex with a power vacuum.

Next, on Crying in the Book Club: We close out Runamay 2 with the last twelve issues of BKV's Runaways.
