• Futurist Gerd Leonhard: Envisioning The Good Future - A conversation with Jacqueline Weigel
    Aug 13 2024
    - Skepticism of the mind, optimism of heart (Antonio Gramsky). - The future exists first in imagination, then in will, then in reality (Barbara Hubbard). - We should be optimistic, not because our problems are smaller than we thought, but because our CAPACITY TO SOLVE THEM is larger than we thought (Kevin Kelly)- In this insightful conversation, futurist Gerd Leonhard speaks with fellow 'futurologo' Jacqueline Weigel (Porto Alegre, Brazil) about the potential for a positive future amidst global challenges like climate change, political turmoil, and advancing technologies. Contrary to widespread pessimism, they emphasize the role of scientific and technological advancements in creating solutions for climate change, healthcare, and the green economy. They underscore the importance of global collaboration, wise policymaking, and ethical leadership. Additionally, they explore the impact of artificial intelligence and the need for regulatory frameworks to prevent misuse. The discussion also delves into concepts of sustainability, prosperity, and the transformative potential of a green revolution. • Futurist Gerd Leonhard: Insights On The Future - REPIC Anniversary Event
    Jul 26 2024
The Next 10 Years: Climate Change, AI, and the Future of Business and Economics In this presentation, I dive into the major changes and developments I anticipate over the next decade. Two monumental waves impacting our future are #climatechange which poses urgent challenges but also presents unprecedented business opportunities in green technology; and the rise of #artificialintelligence , transforming industries and everyday life. I present breakthrough innovations in battery technology and recycling, discuss the creation of new jobs in AI / IA, and the significant investments directed towards climate technology. The inevitable shift away from fossil fuels and the role of AI in automating routine tasks are highlighted. It's not the end of work, it's the end of routines. The talk also touches on the importance of foresight, the challenges of global collaboration, and the potential of emerging technologies like quantum computing and genetic engineering. The convergence of the digital, sustainability, and purpose revolutions is emphasized, along with the moral and ethical considerations of these developments. Ultimately, the discussion focuses on the need for sustainable capitalism, the changing job market, and the importance of independent human knowledge in a rapidly evolving world. • Futurist Gerd Leonhard - AGI By 2030. Interview with Anna Rita Guerra
    Jul 22 2024
In this special edit of a recent interview with Ana Rita Guerra, I discuss the potential arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI) within five to seven years, while highlighting the benefits of intelligent assistance for practical tasks such as emissions control, protein folding, and translation, which can significantly boost efficiency and economic impact. However, I express concern about the societal and policy challenges posed by AGI, including over-dependence, disinformation, and job displacement. Drawing comparisons to the development of nuclear technology, I advocate for an AGI non-proliferation agreement and regulation to ensure responsible use of AGI. I conclude with cautious optimism for technological solutions to global issues but express pessimism about achieving the necessary global collaboration. • Futurist Gerd Leonhard - AGI By 2030? Think Again!
    Jul 22 2024
This is the full version of my special livestreamed event on Artificial General Intelligence / AGI on July 18 and 19, 2024 You can watch it on YouTube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3dRQ7QZ_wc Watch the edited (Q&A) version with @LondonFuturists David Wood on YouTube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYyTIky2MLc&t=0s In this special livestreamed event I outlined my arguments that while IA (Intelligent Assistance) and some forms of narrow AI may well be quite beneficial to humanity, the idea of building AGIs, i.e., 'generally intelligent digital entities' (as set forth by Sam Altman / #openai and others) represents an existential risk that IMHO should not be undertaken or self-governed by private enterprises, multinational corporations or venture-capital funded startups. I believe we need an AGI-Non-Proliferation-Agreement. I outline what the difference between IA/AI and AGI or ASI (superintelligence) is, why it matters and how we could go about it. IA /AI yes *but with clear rules, standards, and guardrails. AGI: NO, unless we're all on the same page. Who will be Mission Control for humanity?

  • Futurist Gerd Leonhard - AI: Competence Not Consciousness - A Tool Not A Purpose
    Apr 15 2024
This is my entire keynote at MODEX 2024 in Atlanta https://www.modexshow.com/ Thanks to @poweredbymhi and MODEX for making the video available - you can watch it on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQXaahnX1Qc As we step into a future powered by #artificialintelligence we find ourselves at a crossroads. In this talk, I explain that the key to harnessing the full potential of AI isn't in replicating human consciousness (aka achieving GI) but in using it as a powerful tool to enhance our capabilities, improve efficiency, and innovate. It's competence, not consciousness. AI is already transforming most industries via predictive analytics, automation and over #cognification. Yet, with this great power comes great responsibility. We must safeguard our data, address AI biases, and ensure its ethical use to protect what makes us human. Contrary to the widespread fears of job displacement, history shows that new technology usually creates new opportunities and enriches human work. Moreover, tackling challenges like climate change requires both technological solutions and human empathy. AI offers innovative ways to manage resources and foster sustainable practices, paving the way for a greener future. In the realm of supply chain management, AI's capabilities are game-changers, offering efficiency and insight that drive smarter, data-driven decisions. This collaboration between humans and AI isn't about competition but about partnership and progress, guided by ethical principles and by wise policies. The future we're moving towards is one where AI supports our endeavors, enhancing our lives and work without replacing the unique qualities that define us. By embracing AI thoughtfully, we can build a future that's not just technologically advanced but also humane and inclusive.

  • Futurist Gerd Leonhard - We're at the pivot point of The Good Future: CNN Portugal
    Jan 12 2024
Last week, I was interviewed for the PITCH: Brand&Content show that aired on @CNNPortugal on January 6, 2024, produced by @Pitch-brand-and-content (great job, btw). Thanks to Creart.pt for inviting me to be a part of this show. You can watch it on YouTube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBKKjUu-dsM 00:22 The Three Revolutions: Digital, Green, and Human (Pink/Purple) 01:04 The Role of Europe in Leading into The Good Future 01:11 The Dangers of #artificialintelligence and the Need for Containment 02:19 The Power of Trust and Collaboration in Shaping the Future 04:17 The Emergence of a Better Future: Technology, Regulation, and Happiness This year marks a pivotal moment for humanity as we face the convergence of three monumental revolutions: The digital revolution (big blue) has become almost synonymous with artificial intelligence, driving profound transformations across all aspects of our lives. It could be heaven or it could be hell. Simultaneously, the green, #sustainability revolution will gain dramatic momentum in 2024 as societies move decisively towards sustainability, deeply circular practices, and a much more profound commitment to the environment. No company can afford to ignore this global shift towards greener thinking. Lastly, the third revolution, “Big Pink” (better ...Big Purple) underscores the importance of human agency and purpose. IMHO, #europe stands poised to lead the charge in embracing sustainability and prioritizing the existential importance of human intelligence and agency. In #2024, the central question before us is whether we really should sacrifice our humanity, skills, #freewill and human agency for the elusive allure of efficiency and rapid technological progress... I'll have a few things to say about that:))
