Grief is not a problem to be solved❤️
Thank you Til for openly sharing your experience of loss and for giving your energy to the discussion. That energy is so precious. Those tears each weigh a ton and come at a cost. I loved the poem.
This is a hugely important topic for those of us who tactilely treat people for a living.
I lost my husband of 30 years very suddenly in 2021 and then my oldest son overdosed 2 months later. I lost my ability to function for a few months and took time off from my Boulder bodywork practice, but at some point thankfully realized my practice could possibly keep me alive by making me stay uniquely present and giving me a place to emotionally regulate. Sharing my truth of grief was at first unavoidable with clients--it would out no matter, and I would choke at the re-telling, but it was uneven. Some days I couldn't speak. Some days I could tell the whole story without a tear as if it had happened to someone else.
Clients feel our energy acutely. We know this. To try to hide our loss (or depression, anxiety) is doing them and us a disservice. We have to find a way to share our true natures while remaining professional. The only way through the white hot pain of early grief and a soothing balm in later grief is to let ourselves touch and feel too.
These losses have changed everything for me. I'm now fearless in my work and relationships. I cut back my hours, became an Essentialist, and decluttered my bodywork offerings and clients to only those I love. I meditate daily. I took on an apprentice to help her develop into an independent practitioner with a fearless heart too.
Perception of loss changes with time but the heart never heals and that's as it should be. I believe we require loss to appreciate the impermanence which gives life color and richness.
Much gratitude to Til and Whitney for these podcasts. ❤️
