The Murder Factory: A True Crime Tale of Arsenic and Greed

In this episode, we dive headfirst into the chilling tale of Amy Archer-Gilligan, Connecticut’s pint-sized purveyor of arsenic and faux philanthropy. She didn’t just run a nursing home; she ran what the Hartford Courant dubbed “The Murder Factory.” Residents checked in with their wallets, and many checked out in caskets—after signing over every last dime to Amy.

Join us as we unpack the audacious schemes, the suspiciously high body count, and one determined sister’s pursuit of justice.

George Russell Jr.: The Class Clown Who Became a Serial Killer

In 1958 Florida, George Russell Jr. seemed destined for an ordinary life—or at least as ordinary as it could be with his mother, Joyce, leaving him behind to start college. Fast-forward, and George’s life takes more turns than a soap opera on fast-forward. His charm and humor kept people entertained, but underneath the jokes was a kid desperate for attention. In high school, he was the class clown; in his twenties, a couch-hopping charmer with friends all over Bellevue’s nightclubs. But George’s need for connection took a dark, disturbing twist that no one could see coming. He was the “helpful” guy at the police station by day, a nightclub prowler by night, and a chilling killer lurking in the shadows. This episode dives into the life of George Russell Jr.—the boy who wanted to be loved, the man who terrified a community, and the murderer who thought he could charm his way out of anything.

  • Silent Night, Sinister Night: The Mystery of Joanna Yeates
    Nov 14 2024
Silent Night, Sinister Night: The Mystery of Joanna Yeates

Welcome to Clifton, Bristol—a neighborhood with postcard-perfect streets, historic homes, and, in 2010, a mystery darker than a holiday fruitcake. Joanna Yeates, a bright and beloved young landscape architect, had just settled into a new flat with her boyfriend. Life was supposed to be sweet, filled with cider, Christmas lights, and maybe even some homemade mince pies. But in a twist that gripped the whole country, Joanna vanished just days before Christmas, sparking one of Britain’s most intense manhunts.

Enter Christopher Jefferies, her quirky landlord with an eccentric reputation and a penchant for solitude. His arrest by police didn’t just raise eyebrows; it opened a floodgate of public suspicion and media frenzy that practically convicted him on sight. But was this mild-mannered ex-teacher really the monster lurking upstairs? Or was there something darker and even closer to home?

In this episode, we dive into the chilling truth behind Joanna’s case and how it twisted the lives of everyone involved. We’ll follow the trail of evidence, uncover Vincent Tabak’s hidden life, and see how a quiet street in Clifton became a cautionary tale of misplaced judgment and unspeakable secrets.

Grab your warmest blanket and settle in—this isn’t just a whodunit, it’s a reminder of how quickly the ordinary can turn sinister.

Brief and bingeable

These podcasts are short, sweet and informative. Joe’s voice is perfect; when listening to his podcasts; I picture him sitting behind a desk with a Fedora hat pulled down, wearing a trench coat, holding a drink in one hand and a cigar in the other.

Ten Minute Murder

Joe is soothing and easy to listen to, even when telling a horrific story. He also has a great sense of humor and the perfect amount of moral outrage for the villains.

Bone chilling

Arthur Shawcross was born and raised 3 miles from my house. He was much older than me, however my father went to middle school and high school with Art and his cousin Dave. His first murders-2 minor boys that lived in the area, rocked our small town. My father is friends with Dave to this day. He was always uncomfortable and put off by Art. This is a tragic story about a man who should have spent his life behind bars after the murders in Watertown BY, but instead, he got released and went on to taunt and murder several women because of his inability to perform sexually. A perfect example of what happens when justice and the system make undeniably terrible unreasonable choices to release violent criminals who are unlikely to turn their lives around and mesh with society.

Hardly ever disappointed

From day one I have been a fan of this podcast, I have an immense appreciation for Joe's humor and commentary. The stories are surprisingly thorough considering the brevity, and he takes the care needed to deliver these subject matter synopsis.

Spot on research/information

Thank you for doing a research and being so thorough. Being the court clerk, for one of your stories, I know firsthand how much time you had to put into these podcasts. I live in the small town of Crescent City, which is just north of Klamath California where the sad story of Jared Wyatt came out of, the previous up-and-coming, MMA fighter. Thank you for also putting your heart in each one it means a lot! These are definitely worth the listen.

what in the literal HELL

if EVER there was a living nightmare- this existing piece of darkness truly was it. what a deeply vile, insatiably evil human being. it's amazing, with monsters like this being born, that any of us manage to make it to adulthood. i never realized how many murderers were in existence and my heart breaks for how many lives each one devours. Ugh.

Good stuff

This podcast is so easy to binge. I'm all caught up after a week or so of commuting and listening during lunch. I guess you could say I'm addicted. I enjoy the humor and the effort. I've listened to many podcasts and this is probably my second favorite.
