About this listen
What if you could stop eating, stop working at a bad job, stop a bad relationship - stop anything when you have had enough? Understanding WHY you eat can lead to real and lasting change - both in weight loss and all other areas of life. In You Are Why You Eat food becomes a digestible metaphor. Most of us are unable to walk away - from a plate of food or a bad situation. But instead of staying and trying to please others all the time, what would happen if you listened to your inner voice? Dr. Ramani Durvasula reveals that how you eat and live often ties directly into the desire to please your stakeholders - parents, partners, friends, and society. Understanding WHY you eat will lead to real change and let you take back your life.
In You Are Why You Eat Dr. Ramani takes a fresh, brave, and edgy approach to self-help. Through real-life anecdotes and thought-provoking exercises, she gives you the tools you need to live on your terms. This powerful book will help you trust your gut, while making that gut smaller at the same time. And it will teach you to live a life that is bolder, more authentic, and less riddled with regret.
This book is about learning how to quit, when to quit, when to walk away, and how to acknowledge when you are full. It's about turning off the voices of the world and listening to the one that matters most: your own.

Story
Health and wellness campaigns preach avoidance of unhealthy foods, sedentary lifestyles, tobacco, drugs, and alcohol, but rarely preach avoidance of unhealthy, difficult, or toxic people. Yet the health benefits of removing toxic people from your life may have far greater benefits to both physical and psychological health. We need to learn to be better gatekeepers for our minds, bodies, and souls. Narcissism, entitlement, and incivility have become the new world order, and we are all in trouble. They are not only normalized but also increasingly incentivized.

Story
Although clinical research has been conducted on narcissism as a disorder, less is known about its effects on victims who are in toxic relationships with partners with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Individuals with this disorder engage in chronic devaluation and manipulation of their partners, a psychological and emotional phenomenon known as "narcissistic abuse". Unfortunately, the full extent of what narcissistic abuse entails is not taught in any psychology class or diagnostic manual.

Discover why women are so often unhappy with their appearance - and how they can learn to love themselves. When women are told that what is important about us is how we look, it becomes increasingly difficult for us to feel comfortable with our appearance and how we feel about our bodies. We are told, over and over - if we just lost weight, fit into those old jeans, or into a new smaller pair - we will be happier and feel better about ourselves.

Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Superheroes don't start from glorious beginnings. Their origins are almost always marked by traumatic events that leave them helpless and scared. Batman witnessed his parents' murder. Superman was sent away from his dying planet with no one to guide him as he grew up. Orphaned Catwoman was forced to steal food to survive on the streets of Gotham. What makes these superheroes super is their determination to not be defined by helplessness. They embrace their origins, their flaws, and their mistakes and strive every day to become the best versions of themselves.

Yet the health benefits of removing toxic people from your life may have far greater benefits to both physical and psychological health. We need to learn to be better gatekeepers for our minds, bodies, and souls. Narcissism, entitlement, and incivility have become the new world order, and we are all in trouble. Story
It’s not always easy to tell when you’re dealing with a narcissist. One day they draw you in with their confidence and charisma, the next they gaslight you, wreck your self-confidence, and leave you wondering, What could I have done differently? As Dr. Ramani Durvasula reveals in It's Not You, the answer is: absolutely nothing. Just as a tiger can’t change its stripes, a narcissist won’t stop manipulating and invalidating you. To heal in the aftermath of their abuse and protect yourself from future harm, you first have to accept that you are not to blame.

The voice is too robotic for me
I’m sure Ms Jacobs is a great person but I couldn’t comprehend any information because of the way it was narrated. It’s very “customer service robotic system” like. Too flat and too “right”. There is a very narrow amplitude of the voice, I wish Dr.Ramani narrated herself. I have to drop it bc I made it to the half of it, with great difficulty, and can’t even describe what’s it about, fully.
I don’t agree though, with the notion of ordering half the portion at the restaurant (paying full price? I’d rather ask to split it and pack the other half to go, and eat it tomorrow). Or, THROWING IT AWAY??? What a waste. I’m not going to do that. I’m not saying I’d rather eat it than throw it away (like, being human garbage can), I’m saying you can eat it tomorrow.

undecided
I was not thrilled. Focus on eating and family dynamics and fear was just ok.

Topical Weight Loss Story
Her other book and podcasts were very interesting and informative. She had good content, good read/listening. So I decided to try another from Dr. Durvasuls, just not the same as her other book or work.

Lose your husband, then lose weight
The book should have been titled "Lose Your Husband, then Lose some weight". This book is for a very specific audience (women stuck in bad marriages) -- and I am not in that audience.
