These are the two wondrous parades; one visual here on earth in which we ought to share in the sorrow like the apostle who said, “weep with those who weep” (Epistle to Romans 12:15), and another which is in heaven proclaiming the joy of the salvation of every man and his peaceful passing from the world to live as a partner with the glories of Christ, the Lord. St. Anthony the Great says: [Death, for those who understand it, is immortality; but for the fools who don’t understand it, it is mere death. We shall not fear this death; rather we should fear the death of the soul, which is not getting to know God. This is what truly terrifies the soul!] St. John Chrysostom believes that when a believer passes away, God sends one or more angels as representatives of heaven to escort him in his journey to Paradise and to welcome his arrival. They walk him through heaven and introduce him to the heavenly hosts and show him the divine throne so he would enjoy these indescribable things. He shares in what was spoken of by the apostle Paul, whose soul ascended to the third heaven, seeing what the “eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).
