About this listen

A powerful and engrossing tale of extremes and extremists, D. H. Lawrence's Women in Love follows the passionate relationships of two sisters, Gudrun and Ursula Brangwen, with their respective lovers, the ominous Gerald Crich and the charismatic but fragile Rupert Birkin. Beginning in a narrow-minded English colliery town and culminating amidst the ice and snow of the Alps, the abortive alliance between the two men and the couples' affairs are played out against the derangements of industrialism and the need to find new ways of living and better ways of dying.

A masterpiece that heralded the erotic consciousness of the 20th century, Lawrence considered Women in Love his best novel, exploring through it his belief that love is "the great creative process".

Critic reviews

"His masterpiece.... An astonishing work that moves on several levels.... Lawrence compels us to admit that we live less finely than we should, whatever we are." ( The New York Review of Books)

Exasperating Toxic Relationships!

The story was not like “The Rainbow,” Part 1 of the Brangwin Family. Part 2 felt much more about Goodrun and how she played games in her relationships. Ursula too was insensitive and played games . These types of relationships were irritatingly disconcerting. I did want to quit the book several times, but didn’t mind listening while gardening.
The narrator’s voice was shrill and not like the sweet voice of Maureen O’Hara who narrates the Rainbow. This narrator made the dialogue much like a slapstick comedy show and unpleasant to listen to the actual story.

Amazing narration!

The narrator is simply incredible! What a voice and such mastery of English and French and German and Italian. My first exposure to D H Lawrence. The story is very well told. The writing is dense; it gives you a great deal to think about.

Exhausting.....

The premise of the book was good but with it's continual debating between characters it
exhausted me. Their debates are very liberal thinking for that day but they had no more
answers than they had questions. I waded through the book hoping for at least a good ending.
The ending was disappointing and I felt as if I'd wasted not only a credit but a lot of time
listening to it. The narrator's voice was so shrill with no variation between characters that
I often couldn't listen for more than 15 minutes at a time. This is why it gets a "1" star from me.

I haven’t had such intense emotional thoughts for decades

I like it because I have a lot to think about before I start another book. There is just an intense lot of undertones one must think about. But it did remind me of parts of my youth I had forgotten about and the dredging up of those memories was a mixture of good and bad. Overall, I have to say; What an incredible book.

love sucks

Two sisters find romantic partners, one is a healthy relationship the other is very toxic. The relationship of the two males is explored, showing how domestic violence affects more than just the couples directly involved.

Not Modern Day Women

I wish I'd had to read this book way back in High School or even college...it may have spoken to ne differently. If this is ab indication of Lawrence's writing I don't plan on reading another of his books for a long time!!
