About this listen

London, 1944. Two young nurses meet at a train station with a common purpose: to join the war effort. Scarlet longs for the chance to find her missing fiancé, Thomas, and to prove to her family - and to herself - that she's stronger than everybody thinks. Nursing is in Ellie's blood, but her humble background is vastly different from Scarlet's privileged upbringing. Though Ellie puts on a brave face, she's just as nervous as Scarlet about what awaits them in France.

In Normandy, the two friends soon encounter the seemingly unflappable Lucy. Scarlet and Ellie are in awe of her courage and competence, but the experienced nurse is well aware of the dangers of the job they've chosen - and even she is terrified they won't make it home alive.

Pushed to their limits by the brutality of a world at war, Scarlet, Ellie and Lucy will need to rely on each other - and the power of their friendship - to survive.

Rather predictable

I was disappointed because I could guess every plot line in advance. Also some parts were quite drawn out and I kept wishing for the story to move forward.

Wives of war

I really enjoyed this book! Why isn't it a movie? A few more historic details and it would be an award winner for sure.

Wives of War

This book was amazing! The author's description and the tale that was told by three women during WW 2 sent shivers up my spine. People who serve together in military service and during the time of war create special bonds. Awesome book!

Superb Writing and Brilliantly Recorded Audio

The narration was engaging. I found it difficult to pause., almost addicting. As a man, I almost didnt purchase this audio book, but my parents lived their young lives during this period, and my father was stationed at Pearl Harbor. i bought the audio and the book and found the audio so engaging that I never read even one page of the book. I found this novel to be a great insight into the mind of women. Enjoy!

Just the right amount of romance and adventure

About a month ago I listened to a book about women in WWII...I got hooked! This book is great. There was a glimpse into the horrors nurses faced in the war as well as the bonds of friendship formed. Of course there was some romance too (not in the romance novel way...in the falling in love way). I really liked the narrator too. I am going to find another book by Soraya M. Lane!

great story and great reading.

I really enjoyed this book. The reader had an authentic sounding English accent which added to the positive flavor of the work.
I love that there was romance in a clean way

The narrator was actually good

I was afraid to try this book after reading the previous reviews but I think they really over exaggerated. The narrator was amazing at differentiating the different characters and she does so many different accents and voices so well. He narrating between was a little monotoned but if you speed up the narration to 1.2 or so I thought it was just fine. Loved the story and the flow. It’s definitely worth the read!

good read

I enjoyed the story itself. I liked the story from the nurses' perspective; however, I will admit I wasn't a fan of the person speaking in the audio portion. Too monotone for my taste.

Great Story

Loved it. It really brings to life what it might have been like to be a nurse during war and thus time period. I loved the rich depth of each character.
It is CLEAN and not too gruesome. Things happen but just not in great detail.
Highly recommend!
