Depressing

In 1973, at age eight, Anya is selected for a special sports school in the USSR, hoping she’ll one day do her country honor as an Olympic gymnast. Abandoned by her ballerina mother three years earlier and raised by her hard-working father, Anya’s gymnastics also brings badly needed funds to her struggling family.

Told from the years 1973, 1977 and 1998 Anya’s rise and fall, the friendships longed for, made and lost and and her family’s struggles are recounted in Rae Meadows’s latest historical fiction.

The world needs more gymnastics books. I’m old enough to remember Anya’s idol, Olga Korbut competing at the Olympics though I only remembered Nellie Kim and Nadia among the other gymnasts fictionalized for WINTERLAND. I remember the stronghold the Soviet Union had on gymnastics. I remember hearing athletes speak the words, “I defect” and the excitement of knowing someone chose freedom, at great risk to his or her life. Until reading WINTERLAND, I never realized families of such athletes could be penalized.

I liked WINTERLAND because I’m a gymnastics fan, but found the story slow and depressing. To be fair, historical fiction isn’t usually my genre, but I’ll read anything related to gymnastics.

Enjoyable read

Very good narration. Particularly interesting if you are familiar with the gymnastic competitions of that time period. I liked the writing style with a good balance of description, character development and story pace. Seems to be well researched also.

Excellent USSR period piece

Excellent narration and story set in the world of USSR gymnastics in the 1970s. Not perfect, but very true to the sport and the period.

Loved the characters and the story! Especially interesting if you remember the days when the Soviet Union dominated gymnastics.

I thought it was a sad ending. I wish it didn’t end like this but the story was riveting.

Heartbreakingly beautiful novel

Rae Meadows takes the reader into a world that is haunting and full of peril, but also one filled with hope, simple joys, and dynamic human achievement. The political background is fascinating and it resonates very much with our current complex geopolitical challenges.

How irritating…

…to be introduced to a mystery that after completing the book, is still not solved. I will not read anything else from this author.

Disappointing. A letdown

I wanted to love this. I was so excited for it. It was a letdown. It was just meh the entire way through.
