Seine Sätze, dass er etwa »außer Blut, Schweiß und Tränen« nichts zu bieten habe, sind geflügelte Worte. Churchill gilt als einer der größten Redner der Geschichte, hat seinen aufwendigen Lebensunterhalt als Schriftsteller und Journalist bestritten und wurde mit dem Nobelpreis für Literatur ausgezeichnet. Er galt in den dreißiger Jahren als politisch erledigt, doch da er unermüdlich vor der Bedrohung durch Deutschland gewarnt hat, wurde er über Nacht Premierminister während deutsche Truppen in Frankreich einmarschierten und war Hitlers härtester Gegner.

Franziska Augstein ist eine akribische Geschichtsschreiberin, ordnet das Dargestellte stets in einen grösseren Kontext ein und versteht es, die Charaktere der Protagonisten eindringlich zu zeichnen. Mit diesem Buch ist ihr die perfekte Balance zwischen empathischem Verstehen und nüchterner Distanz gelungen.
