About this listen

After fleeing from the burning ruins of Saardam, Johanna, Prince Roald, Loesie, and Nellie have been captured by a group of bandits and are being taken to a place unknown through a forest rife with magic. Loesie, struck mute by an unknown but powerful sorcerer, is behaving increasingly strange. The friends try to escape, but is Loesie helping them or is she a danger to them?

Every step they take through the ghost-ridden forest brings them closer to the duke who is rumoured to be the source of the evil magic. He is the necromancer whose anger against Saarland's royal family has lain the world to waste.

Capture, freedom and a demon

Johanna, Roald, Nellie, and Loesie are prisoners. Johanna is determined to escape once the time is right. Their development is good. Roald and Johanna were married just prior to the capture and she is not sure what she thinks about it or him. He is a prince. She is the daughter of a merchant. Nellie and Loesie are her friends.

The plot flows well. There is action and drama. The bandits claim to have kidnapped them to help them. I'd recommend this book to those looking for a book about royalty and war with magic. I can't wait to read (listen) to the next book. I enjoyed the book.

The narrator does a great job. She has a nice voice and helps to bring the story to life.

Is all magic evil?

Johanna, her childlike husband Prince Roald, Loesie and their servant Nellie are fleeing their ravaged homeland when they're captured by bandits. Magic is considered evil where they come from but the forest they travel through seems filled with it. Johanna must keep her wits about her to keep them all from harm.

I haven't read the first book in the series so I think I might have enjoyed the story more if I had known the basic backgrounds of the characters. Like why did Johanna marry the Prince, and why is he so naive?

Not my usual type of reading choice, but an enjoyable story with interesting characters and good narration.

I disliked this book

The first 5 chapters were about how several people were kidnapped by a group of men that they didn't know and were traveling through wooded areas, where magical creatures lived. The kidnappers brought along with them dogs and magical bears for protection. The story line was bland. Nothing really happens until near the end. Not worth reading. I listened to this story through Audible. The narration was bad. All the male characters sounded the same. I could tell if the king , that was accompanying them, who has Autism, was speaking or was another male character. Poor diction, Lucy was complaining all the time. I just didn't enjoy this story.
