About this listen

In the heart of the California gold country, three-year-old Sarah McKensie is orphaned by a stagecoach robber and then adopted and nursed by a she-wolf in this playful homage to the American tall tale.

As she matures, Sarah learns to assist her pack by contributing human tools to the hunt and, eventually, interacting with humans. With her best friend and pack-sister, Beka, at her side, Sarah becomes a local legend: the Wild Angel of the Sierras, rescuer of imperiled travelers. Her altruism is motivated by curiosity and bafflement at the settlers' inability to perceive the world around them, as well as a passion for biscuits. A kaleidoscopic cast colors her adventures, including a brief cameo by Samuel Clemens and, of course, two hiss-worthy villains: one human, one lupine.

Critic reviews

"Faithful to the spirit of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Tarzan tales and Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book, this story of a young girl's courage and resourcefulness belongs in most fantasy and YA collections." (Library Journal)

Not just for kids

This is a superbly written and read audiodrama. The reader does accents, animals, males and females in an incredible performance. The book has fascinating charachters and really brings the life of Northern CA during the gold rush to life. Truly a fantastic read!

Amazing, Mesmerizing Read

I was hesitant to invest in a book not aimed at the adult market, but I'm so glad I did. This has to be one of the best books I've ever read. The author's writing is superb--excellent pacing, beautiful descriptive language, and an intriguing story. I simply could not stop listening to this book, once I got started. If I have one complaint, it's that I missed a whole night's sleep because I could not stop listening to it all night long.

A Touching Adventure Novel!

In 1850 little Sara watches from her hiding place as her parents are murdered in California while they panned for gold. She is then raised by wolves and grows up in the wilderness as a she-Tarzan. I know it sounds corny but it wasn’t at all. This is a very well written adventure novel with fantastic characters and lots of drama. I loved the way it explained the wolf’s behaviors and the pact dynamics. Bernadette Dunne is my favorite narrator and as always she did an excellent job. I enjoyed this story so much so that I didn’t want it to end. It’s a great listen for any age and its one of those books you’ll find on your favorite list.
