Publisher's summary

We have been talking about the symptoms for years, it is about time to talk about the disease.

Just like you, I am not immune to Big Business Technologies. There are sophisticated, algorithmic means of why you and I are addicted. The problem is not in the degrading of us into political factions, or how we seem to waste more and more of our time online. They are problems, sure, but they are symptoms from the deeper disease. This book puts the illness out in the limelight, exposes what the Big Business Technologies won’t show you, and helps us arrive at practical solutions to make our lives and nations better.

Sounds lofty right? I know. But I am certain that you will be convinced just like I have been.

  • Cut through the things you already know are wrong and get to the root of the matter; how to change what is endemic to our Big Business technology problems.
  • Discover multiple reasons why you are addicted to technology and how to practically alleviate it.
  • You will know that even some “good” changes can lead to grave outcomes, which will make us live in the dystopian worlds of George Orwell and Ales Huxley.
  • Discover why you are a means to an end.
  • And know that the spying, probing and prodding on you may be for your own very benefit.

We buy fire trucks in advance to put out the roaring flames if your house is burning. But we also use fewer igniting materials, we have safety-professionals annually approving known fire starters and a conscious non-burning-your-house-down lifestyle. The same is with Big Technology. But right now we are willingly burning our houses down while complaining that the fire trucks never arrive; not how to prevent the houses from burning down to begin with.

Changing these platforms starts by informing yourself of the tangible problems, not the manifestations from them, like Echo Chambers, Mood Contagion, or wasted time, so tap or click the Buy button and have your eyes opened.

Bazinga

I've just finished a third book by J. H. Pii and he once again provides quality. He does a great job in this book by providing enough information in just the right length. I found a lot of useful information and tidbits I will take to heart as I navigate the technology at my disposal. This book provided explanations of the workings of various platforms in a succinct manor. I learned a few things and that is always a win in my eyes. This book was a fun listen and I would recommend it to anyone. The author did a good job with the narration as well. I was sucked in and listened to this short book in one sitting. Do yourself a favor and grab this book.

Disclaimer: My enjoyment of the narrator is based on my listening speed. I only leave 5 stars for books I've listened to or will listen to multiple times.

I requested this book from the author, narrator, or publisher in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Enlightening, eye-opening, and informative

I appreciated the author’s detailed introduction, which described the organization of the book, a helpful tool that kept me engaged. The author’s knowledge of a complex subject matter was clear, and his explanations of everyday examples of our usage of social media platforms facilitated understanding to the listener. Although I was aware of how the social media platforms obtain data from users, the author opened my eyes much wider to the extent that this occurs on a constant basis. His voice was calming and maintained my interest throughout. I think anyone who spends several hours a day on the internet would benefit from this book.

Definitely an interesting look at our societal norms and technology

This was an intriguing book. It is much more than the usual reasons why it’s important to limit time and exposure to technology and social media. While it does discuss social media and privacy issues it does bring up many points in multiple areas that we take for granted and have stopped questioning. This book was much more than I expected and actually sparked some interesting conversations with my teenagers.

Good audio book

Not your average technology book, if anything it shows the dark side of tech that is not often spoken about

I feel like Neo in the matrix! My eyes are open!

For the last few years I have felt out of control even at night I felt like my mind was racing and I didn’t understand why. Now I get it, it wasn’t an accident it was on purpose! They want us this way if you feel like technology is controlling you and you don’t understand how you need to listen to this book!

Enlightening and Informative

I really enjoyed this book. It offered to look at technology that we may not always consider. I feel I have gained a new awareness through the many examples given, and the book is peppered with stories and studies that illustrate each point well. Definitely worth a listen!

Eye Opening

It takes a look at our dependency on things like social media, and how it can influence the psyche. We as users readily allow big tech to manipulate us into sacrificing privacy. This is something we should all take note of. It can be alarming to find out just how much personal data we share that can be used against us. Advertisers target us based on information we readily provide them. Recommended for anyone who feels trapped by technology and in need of release.

A Little terrifying

This is a very interesting look at data mining and honestly if it doesn't make you want to go "off grid" and cut all technology out of your life...nothing will. It's frightening how much personal information we voluntarily give to the data miners without realizing it.
This is a well thought out and informative book.
and scary. Did I mention scary?
I was given this book for free and this is my honest review.
