When Sofia sets out from South America to start a new life in the States, she is forced to leave young Manny and Isobel behind until she can afford to send for them. To her disappointment, Sofia soon discovers evil is just as prevalent in her new country as it was in her home country. Working at a hotel, Sofia sees numerous children she suspects are being held there against their will. After Sofia meets Hector, the hotel’s maintenance man, she devises a plan with him to help the most vulnerable. But will she jeopardize her own citizenship status? Will her own children ever be able to join her? And more importantly, if she and Hector don’t rescue the children, then who will?

This is a very special short story, at just under four hours, the listener has time to ponder everything. The tone is prominently somber, with a heavy subject matter, lightened somewhat by a sweet love story.
I knew the overall topic was heavy, based on the description, but the themes of immigration and human trafficking in the U.S. in the early 1980s are handled with great care by Judy DuCharme, and brought to life gently with narration by Lisa Lynn Sandlin.
The Gospel message is strong within this book. The characters depend on God, and wish to honor and serve Him with their lives.
Each character, from the lovable and heroic, to the vile and detestable, is well-written and believable. This storyline is engaging and even-paced, I never felt lost in the shifts between Bolivia and the United States settings.
I was struck at how thought provoking this story is. It makes me wonder what I might miss happening around me, in my own everyday life. Would I notice signs of one in danger, or dismiss it as teen angst?
This story contains brief mentions of:
child abuse, emotional abuse, gaslighting, kidnapping, pedophilia, rape, slavery, trafficking
These difficult topics are not explored in graphic detail, but the author provides enough context for the reader to understand the gravity of the situation, without lingering in the trauma.
Thought Provoking and Heartfelt Novella
