About this listen

Hear ye, hear ye! Get ready to learn all about the most powerful court in the United States.

Ever since it was established in 1789, the United States Supreme Court has had a major impact on the lives of all Americans. Some of its landmark decisions have helped end segregation, protected a person’s privacy, and allowed people to marry whomever they love.

Best-selling author, former executive editor of The New York Times, and self-confessed political junkie, Jill Abramson has written a detailed and fascinating book that explains how the highest court in the United States works, who gets to serve on it, which cases have had the greatest impact on the country, and why the US justice system is so vital to democracy.

Listeners will be excited to hear this addition to this New York Times Best-Selling series.

Too political

Only lightly touches on what the supreme court is and what it's function is. The book is mostly about landmark cases some of which are very politically charged such as Roe. My 8 year old is not ready for such material.

Worst, "What is" book that I have ever listened to

This book has so much potential to teach us about the Supreme Court. History was lightly covered. Had two tiny interesting tidbits. It focused on a few significant cases, which is interesting but missed many opportunities to explain the three branches of government and discuss their role and purpose. This What Was? The book is SO WOKE I finally had to turn it off. It really is a book about the History of Freedom and the role that the Supreme Court took to free blacks; it gives far too much credit to the hard work that so many others like MLK and Rosa Parks and so many others did.. This book is not worth your time for Supreme Court topic and should be renamed.
