About this listen

Whether Congress is in session or not, here is an enthralling overview about the branch of our government closest to average Americans.

Best-selling adult author and the first woman to become executive editor of The New York Times, Jill Abramson is a self-confessed political junkie. Now she has written the book she wishes she'd had as a young reader.

Explaining clearly and concisely what exactly Congress does, this audiobook edition is peppered with fascinating stories, including the bloody beating in the Senate of a lawmaker in pre-Civil War days, the Watergate hearings, and Senator Joe McCarthy's shameful "witch hunt" of Communists.

Kids may start considering a career in Congress themselves when they learn fun facts, such as the special "candy desk" in the Senate and the fact that all lawmakers can bring their dogs to work!

Listeners will be excited to hear this latest addition to this number one New York Times best-selling series.

Great! Even for Adults

A great summary of how Congress works. I really appreciate what I gather from these books. Simple language, straight forward and once you understand basic facts, you can go deeper if you wish.

Agenda filled with programming and manipulation

We have listened to dozens of the what is and who was series and if you’ve listened to any of them, you know they’re not all created equally. This one has a hard-core left leaning agenda and is riddled with lies. As you make your way through the final chapters, it gets pretty unbearable. I found myself stopping to explain to my children that certain statements weren’t true, and I had to talk to them about listening for negativity towards group and positivity towards another, which will lean someone in a direction of writing wrong belief. It’s wrong to program children through a children’s book. Think of the groups in history who have behaved this way and their outcomes.
