About this listen

What do we do with the Bible? Does this ancient, sometimes violent and contradictory text have anything to teach us today?

Selective use of scripture - by preachers and politicians alike - has been employed to justify violence, racism, misogyny, homophobia...the list goes on. Still, we believe the Bible has something important to say. How can we read it in a contemplative and intelligent way?

In What Do We Do with the Bible?, Richard Rohr answers just this question. He offers a methodology of hermeneutics (interpretation) that creates a foundation for a hopeful and cosmic vision - incarnation from beginning to end of time. (He explores this vision further in The Universal Christ).

In particular, Father Richard focuses on Jesus' own method of using his Hebrew Scriptures. Jesus read between the lines to find and follow God's mercy, inclusion, and compassionate justice. For him, everything came down to relationship and transformation.

A Much-Needed Teaching

This should be required reading by anyone who wants to study the sacred scriptures of the Christian faith. Richard is so grounded in his understanding of our Bible. Warning: If you've studied the Bible without the understanding of this teaching, you may not like it....at all. And if you're willing to approach this teaching with an open mind, open heart and open spirit....and be willing to admit you've been mistaken, this book has the power to change the way you read the scriptures, the power to change your faith...and yes, the power to even change your life. Bravo, Fr. Richard Rohr. <3

Helpful

This has helped me to understand a little more about how to read the Bible. And I wish this had been much longer, A whole book on this subject would be so helpful

I need to listen to this one again.

All of Rohr's titles are worth repeat consumption but this one seemed more density packed that most - to me at least.

I am the man

Having been in ministry for over thirty years and now going through reconstruction, Rohr in a very positive and gracious style, has spoken to my heart. The fact is without love I am nothing…. We are nothing.
I highly recommend this book. You may not at this moment fully comprehend what he is saying, but you will find something resonating in your heart. That will be the Holy Spirit

Hopeful

Someday I pray that this type of wisdom would be incorporated in the Faith Formation of both youth and adults. We need this prophetic wisdom and courage now more than ever.

Thanks for true context.

Simply bewildering the prominence the Bible holds. A book that includes Old Testament writings full of violence followed by a New Testament loaded with contradictions and the most unlikely Jesus quotes.
Rohr provides real context and brilliantly brings logic and true spirituality to the question of What Do We Do with The Bible. Absolutely worth your time.

Always new insights

Loved the content. Richard Rohr never fails to teach me a few new ways to look at Scripture and help me on my spiritual journey. I gave Fr. Quigley 4 stars because his narration is very well done. But I like recordings of Richard Rohr’s works much better when he does the reading and/or live presentation.
