England, 1940. Opening the box with trembling hands, she couldn’t believe it–a tiny baby lay inside. She gently lifted the newborn as it started to cry. Story
Following a humiliating experience involving the man she thought she’d marry, Iris Tredwick signs up to the Wrens in order to escape and - hopefully - find ‘the right sort’ of man to please her mother. After a bumpy start, Iris manages to befriend outspoken Mary and dreamer Sally as they are sent to their first posting - in Orkney. There she meets engineer Rob, whose flirtatious nature both charms and confounds straight-laced Iris. Much more appropriate for her is local doctor Stewart, if only she felt the same spark for him as she does for Rob.

At the age of 22, Jennifer Worth left her comfortable home to move into a convent and become a midwife in postwar London’s East End slums. The colorful characters she met while delivering babies all over London - from the plucky, warm-hearted nuns with whom she lived to the woman with 24 children who couldn't speak English to the prostitutes and dockers of the city’s seedier side - illuminate a fascinating time in history.

When Lucy Bagshaw's life in Boston falls apart thanks to a scathing editorial written by her famous artist mother, she accepts her half-sister Juliet's invitation to stay with her in Hartley-by-the-Sea, a charming seaside village in Northern England. This enchanting true story, written when the author was 93, is a moving tale of working-class life, the social divide, and forbidden love on the eve of the first World War. The narrow street on which Harry grew up appeared identical to countless other working-class English neighborhoods, except for the invisible wall that ran down the center of the street, dividing the Jewish families on one side from the Christians on the other.

Enjoyable Story Marred by Anachronisms
When I read series books like this one, I'm expecting a somewhat predictable experience, which is part of the comfort appeal. In the case of Weaver Street, I enjoyed the fact that the heart of story was the friendship of three very different women. Unfortunately, the author was very careless about historical research (as was her editor), resulting in some grating anachronisms. Most of these gaffes involved plugging in some popular culture features of WWII into a WWI (& 1920s) setting: Spam, "Make Do & Mend," etc--all introduced to England in the 1940s. And when one woman referred to another as "uptight," I thought I was back in the 60s (though apparently the expression was first coined in the mid-thirties by an American novelist). Am I being nit-picking? Perhaps. but with research just a keystroke away these days, errors such as these are just plain lazy, giving the impression that Ms. Welsh was phoning in a formulaic wartime novel without caring much which war. I still enjoyed aspects of the book, but had more care been taken, it would have been decidedly better.
