About this listen

A trail of secrets. A dangerous discovery. A deadly turn.

Police officer Sebastian Clifford never planned on becoming a private investigator. But when a scandal leads to the disbandment of his London based special squad, he finds himself out of a job. That is, until his cousin calls on him to investigate her husband’s high-profile death, and prove that it wasn’t a suicide.

Clifford’s reluctant to get involved, but the more he digs, the more evidence he finds. With his ability to remember everything he's ever seen, he's the perfect person to untangle the layers of deceit.

He meets Detective Constable Bird, an underutilized detective at Market Harborough’s police force, who refuses to give him access to the records he’s requested unless he allows her to help with the investigation. Clifford isn't thrilled. The last time he worked as part of a team it ended his career. But with time running out, Clifford is out of options. Together they must wade through the web of lies in the hope that they’ll find the truth before it kills them.

Includes bonus story Nowhere to Hide.

A bit predictable

I almost ended this book about 30 minutes in due to the narrator. He does a great job with his male character voices but made me cringe with the children and females. It would have been so much easier to listen to if it was a dual reading with a woman.
Story line is a bit predictable. Sounded pretty much the same as a lot of other cop/mystery stories.

slow beginning, better ending

This started out a bit slow, but did get better. The finish was good enough to be intrigued by book 2.

Loved it!

Had been looking for a good crime series that was not overly "blood and guts" or "child torture" or white knuckle reading. . . just an intelligent who-done-it with likable characters. So glad that Rigby has a good book list under her belt. I will be devouring all of it.

Promising start to a new series

I quite enjoyed this and the characters. I didn’t find the main character boring at all as some other reviewers mentioned! I found all the characters interesting and unique and the narration was stellar. Eager to listen to the next one.

Great Start To New Series

This is the second time I have listened to this story and it just gets better. I like the interaction between Seb and Birdy and how they untangle all the clues. Well written Sally

A nice surprise

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this new-to-me author. I’m a big fan of British (and Irish) police stories and I was not disappointed with this. The story is unique and the characters of Seb and Birdie are full of backstories and now I want more. Thankfully this is the first in a series.

The audiobook is narrated very well by the wonderful Jonathan Keeble.

I love Sally Rigby books

I greatly enjoyed all books by Sally Rigby. The more recent ones have been even better. I love Cavendish and Walker and now am a big fan of Byrdie and Seb.
