About this listen

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of We Need to Talk About... Kevin Bridges. Aged 17, Kevin Bridges walked on stage for the first time and brought the house down. He only had a five-minute set but he discovered he really could earn a living from making people laugh.

Kevin began life as a shy, nerve-ridden school-boy. Reaching his teens, he followed his true calling as the class clown. This was a guy going somewhere - off the rails seeming most likely. Kevin's trademark social commentary, sharp one-liners, and laugh-out-loud humour blend with his reflections on his Glaswegian childhood and the journey he's taken to become one of the most-loved comedians of our time.

Love Kevin Bridges material

As a home sick Glasgow girl born the same year as Kevin I'm addicted to his nostalgia inducing sets. Always puts me in a great mood and helps me hold on to what's left of my accent :) Loved hearing his story and of the hard work and dedication he puts into his craft. Looking forward to future performances.

Great story by a great storyteller

I’ve been listening to and watching Kevin for several years but knew very little of his backstory. This tale of a young man’s desire and drive to make a career out of his natural talent (instead of becoming a lorrie driver, delivering beer to comedy clubs) is a fun and interesting listen. If you are a fan of British comedy, or any comedy, I would highly recommend.

Fantastic book.

This is a prime example of why an author should read his own autobiography. Kevin's bridges has a fantastic way with words and an amazing ability to turn a mundane story into a great laugh. 12 hours of an audio book was almost like listening to 12 hours of his stand up.

I don't think Americans would think he's funny.

What would have made We Need to Talk About Kevin Bridges better?

His humor must be "a Scottish thing." I bought his audiobook and couldn't stand to listen beyond Chapter 12. He goes into gory (boring) detail about his childhood, which was unremarkable, and rambles on and on about soccer. Even if I liked soccer, I wouldn't care what he said about it. His accent is so heavy that he's difficult to understand. I wish I hadn't bought his audiobook. Thank goodness it was only about $16.

What was most disappointing about Kevin Bridges’s story?

He's not old enough to write his life's history. He hasn't experienced enough. He's a comedian but didn't say anything funny — at least in Chapters 1 through 12.

Would you be willing to try another one of Kevin Bridges’s performances?

No!

What character would you cut from We Need to Talk About Kevin Bridges?

Kevin Bridges.

Any additional comments?

I wonder why he thought his childhood — practically from the day he was born — was such an interesting subject on which to elaborate. Nothing about it was unique, unlike, say, Alan Alda's; he grew up traveling with his parents, who were showbiz performers, and had so many fun and interesting anecdotes. Bridges is flattering himself if he thinks that his life so far has been any more interesting than yours or mine. I'm sure that Kevin Bridges is a nice person, but he should stay away from writing his life story for at least another 25 years.
