Jason D. Hill corrects the narrative in this powerfully eloquent book. Dr. Hill came to this country at the age of twenty from Jamaica and, rather than being faced with intractable racial bigotry, Hill found a land of bountiful opportunity - a place where he could get a college education, earn a doctorate in philosophy, and eventually become a tenured professor at a top university, an internationally recognized scholar, and the author of several respected books in his field.

Throughout his experiences, it wasn’t a racist establishment that sought to keep him down. Instead, Hill recounts, he faced constant naysaying from so-called liberals of all races. His academic colleagues did not celebrate the success of a black immigrant but chose to denigrate them because this particular black immigrant did not embrace their ideology of victimization. Part memoir, part exhortation to his fellow Americans, and, above all, a paean to the American Dream and the magnificent country that makes it possible, We Have Overcome is the most important and provocative book about race relations to be published in this century.

What a blessing to hear the American journey and redemptive message of Mr. Hill in this era of brokenness, anger, and hopelessness portrayed on our current national stage. This man gets it

The people who call for socialism and who protest and riot against America are people who don’t get it. Jason immigrated here and understands that we all have the right to create our own future with only the sky as our limitation. He gets it! Great story that should be widely shared.

An Advocate for Reason and America

Jason Hill is an immigrant who came to the United States believing it was the greatest country ever - and he has not been disappointed. Too many Americans are spoiled by the freedom and prosperity we enjoy, condemning our country because it neither was nor is flawless. As President Reagan said, "The perfect is the enemy of the good." The author points out why the US is the most accepting, fair and opportunity-providing place ever. Jared Wright does a fine job of narration that fits well with the book's message. I would highly recommend this title to those open-minded enough to be persuaded by evidence and logic.

A fantastic biography of truth and love for our country!

Prof Hill does an incredible job describing our country from the perspective of an immigrant and brilliantly illustrates and reminds us why we are so very blessed to live here! Even with its imperfections, this is the best place on earth for the human soul. 🙂

The American Dream lives

This was a great "American Dream" story. Dr. Hill arrived in America with nothing but determination and plan and achieved success in America.

My only criticisms of the book are his sometimes wordy and dense description of the American spirit and American personality. His sentences are long and contain sophisticated vocabulary at times and his perceptions of "Americanism" are pretty complex and deep. This is a reflection of Dr. Hill's intellect and my cave manishness, but it still made parts of the book a labor to listen to.

That said, the book shows that, contrary to the popular narrative, talent and hard work are all that is necessary to succeed in America. Race is largely irrelevant.

The most telling and enjoyable portions of the book were when he described his experiences and those of his fellow immigrants as they grew to thrive in the USA.

Equally telling were his experiences as a "conservative" in the far-left world of academia. They didn't know how to handle a successful gay and black man who didn't follow the leftist party line.

Good stuff. A story that deserves to be told.
