About this listen

A story of adventure, power, and influence at the heart of one of the most dangerous times in the history of England.

Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, the "Kingmaker", is the wealthiest noble in England. He becomes a warrior knight, bravely protecting the North against invasion by the Scots. A key figure in what have become known as he Wars of the Roses, he fought in most of the important battles.

As captain of Calais, he turns privateer, daring to take on the might of the Spanish fleet and becoming Admiral of England. The friend of kings, he is the sworn enemy of Queen Margaret of Anjou. Then, in an amazing change of heart, why does he risk everything to fight for her cause?

Writers from William Shakespeare to best-selling modern authors have tried to show what sort of man Richard Neville must have been, with quite different results. Sometimes Warwick is portrayed as the skilled political manipulator behind the throne, shaping events for his own advantage. Others describe him as the last of the barons, ruling his fiefdom like an uncrowned king. Whatever the truth, his story is one of adventure, power, and influence at the heart of one of the most dangerous times in the history of England.

I wanted more

Tony Riches writes an excellent story and is one of my favorite authors, although he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. This book left me wanting more. I wanted more details and more of Warwick’s story.
The narration left something to be desired. Mr. Blaxland has a very pleasing voice, but he puts no emotion in the story. It’s a monotone reading, and that was disappointing.
I still believe it’s worth a read. There’s not much out there about the Kingmaker; he’s usually a bit player in books about the Wars of the Roses, but as the wealthiest man in England, he’s much more than a bit player.

Dull!

One of my favourite subjects which normally keeps me enthralled. Sadly, I found the story too disjointed and the narration extremely monotonous. The narrator needs to do his homework on pronunciation of place names in the North and perhaps animate his voice more. I found myself nodding off several times and was never quite sure where we were up to as I often tuned out of the monotony.

Disappointing use of a credit and will be returning.
