About this listen

There are two things Trevor loves more than anything else: playing war-based video games and his great-grandfather Jacob, who is a true-blue, bona fide war hero. At the height of the war, Jacob helped liberate a small French village, and was given a hero's welcome upon his return to America.

Now it's decades later, and Jacob wants to retrace the steps he took during the war - from training to invasion to the village he is said to have saved. Trevor thinks this is the coolest idea ever. But as they get to the village, Trevor discovers there's more to the story than what he's heard his whole life, causing him to wonder about his great-grandfather's heroism, the truth about the battle he fought, and importance of genuine valor.

My son loves war like video games and this book takes some time to develop but when the story unfolds it does a great job helping explain the complex moral issues and chaos of war while letting a child point of view develop without simple moral lecturing. Excellent work. My child grew from hearing this I feel.

Excellent for kids to understand the complexities of war

As a 13 year old kid who has never heard much about war, this book hit hard. I never really understood how terrible war was before I listened to this book.

Just said it, amazing story. The story is an emotional roller coaster that just might make you cry, laugh, and even love.

The story also showed the different perspectives vividly. But I thought how you could reach even further into perspective is by actually adding other characters perspectives in the story like you did in your other books. This is because I was curios about what it other charecters thought. Like what did Felipe think about Jacob and what changed Julia’s perspective. Your greatest fan, love you Gordon Korma

show

I loved how you shaped your story so that it interlocked with Jacob’s 17 years.

This story is not all about hurrah and being a hero, but also about the inward struggle that many must've faced on the battlefield and in the life that followed. this was a good mix of both that lent the characters depth.
