From Vulture’s “master of horror” Clay McLeod Chapman, a relentless and emotionally charged social horror novel about a family on the run from a demonic possession epidemic that spreads through media, for fans of The Last of Us and Where Evil Lurks
Noah Fairchild has been losing his formerly polite Southern parents to far-right cable news for years, so when his mother leaves him a voicemail warning him that the “Great Reckoning” is here, he assumes it’s related to one of the many conspiracy theories she believes in. But when his own phone calls go unanswered, Noah makes the long drive from Brooklyn to Richmond, Virginia. There, he discovers his childhood home in shambles, a fridge full of spoiled food, and his parents locked in a terrifying trance-like state in front of the TV. Panicked, Noah attempts to snap them out of it and get medical help.
Then Noah’s mother brutally attacks him.
But Noah isn’t the only person to be attacked by a loved one. Families across the country are tearing each other apart—literally—as people succumb to a form of possession that gets worse the more time they spend watching particular channels, using certain apps, or visiting certain websites. In Noah’s Richmond-based family, only he and his young nephew Marcus are unaffected. Together, they must race back to the safe haven of Brooklyn—but can they make it before they fall prey to the violent hordes?
This ambitious, searing novel from “one of horror’s modern masters” holds a mirror to our divided nation, and will shake listeners to the core.

To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: “Can I go inside your heart?” When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the question over and over, Bela understands that unless she says yes, her family will soon pay. Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe, but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage. The safety Bela relies on is about to unravel.

Newly-minted child psychologist Mina has little experience. In a field where the first people called are experts, she’s been unable to get her feet wet. Instead, she aimlessly spends her days stuck in the stifling heat wave sweeping across Britain, and anxiously contemplating her upcoming marriage to careful, precise researcher Oscar. The only reprieve from her small, close world is attending the local bereavement group to mourn her brother’s death from years ago. That is, until she meets journalist Sam Hunter at the grief group one day. And he has a proposition for her.

Thrift fashionista Dez Lane doesn't want to date Patrick Ruskin; she just wants to meet his mother, the editor-in-chief of Nouveau magazine. When he invites her to his family's big Easter reunion at their ancestral home, she's certain she can put up with his arrogance and fend off his advances long enough to ask Marie Caulfield-Ruskin for an internship someone with her pedigree could never nab through the regular submission route. The three Maxwell siblings keep their distance from the lily-white gated enclave outside Dallas where they grew up. When their family moved there, they were the only Black family in the neighborhood. The neighbors acted nice enough, but right away bad things, scary things—the strange and the unexplainable—began to happen in their house. Maybe it was some cosmic trial, a demonic rite of passage into the upper-middle class. Whatever it was, the Maxwells, steered by their formidable mother, stayed put, unwilling to abandon their home, terrors and trauma be damned.

“If you’re reading this, you’ve likely thought that the world would be a better place without you.” A single line of text, glowing in the darkness of the internet. Written by Ashley Lutin, who has often thought the same—and worse—in the years since his wife died and his young son disappeared. But the peace of the grave is not for him—it’s for those he can help. Ashley has constructed a peculiar ritual for those whose desire to die is at war with their yearning to live a better life.

Twenty-five year old Calla Williams is struggling since becoming guardian to her brother, Jamie. Calla is overwhelmed and tired of being the one who makes sacrifices to keep the family together. When Jamie’s actions at a protest spiral out of control, the siblings must go on the run. Clay McLeod Chapman has encapsulated every fear imaginable into one incredible story. Absolutely brilliant.
As another reviewer stated, definitely cringeworthy. Not for the faint of heart or those sensitive to graphic descriptions.
As much as I’d like to recommend this book, I almost wish I never listened to it. As someone who thought they could handle horrific stories, this one easily takes the cake. I both loved it and hated it simultaneously. Bravo Mr. Chapman, great work.
Highly recommended if you hate yourself

This book parrots every conspiracy theory we’ve heard over the past nearly 10 years. If you’ve been around anyone anywhere you can identify some of them. This one was a little too close and a few parts made me stop and remember it is a horror novel
The cast was amazing and I’ve heard some complaints that parts are repetitive but it is a person’s thought process
Horrific on so many levels.

Well, this was anexperience
I don’t think I have ever read anything like this — the plot, the journey, the execution — it was such a unique experience.
I’m glad I went with the Audible format because the audio was SO GOOD.
This book hits HARD in regard to its social and political commentary.
Fox News viewers may not like this book…
…in fact they’ll probably f***ing hate it.
However, it is a very TIMELY appropriate read, especially after the November election (😭). And, just saying, the timely-ness of this book makes it soooo much more terrifying than if it was just your regular ol ‘possession’ novel. It freaked me out how much it made me think about my maga grandma (😭)
Wake Up and Open Your Eyes is disturbing and it is, at times, absolutely disgusting.. so much so that there are moments that were difficult for even me to read.
It’s worth noting that if you are a person that has any triggers, please look up the warnings before diving into this one because Chapman does NOT hold back.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wow

In all its bizarreness, paranoia; and in its own way relatable to reality- this was a banger!
» Cringe worthy and comical at moments.
I was instantly entangled in this insane story that follows the revolving obsession with ‘Fax News’ (get it?) that’s brainwashing society. Social media- brainwashing society.
» The audio to this was 🤌🏻✨
I found that with the format of this book, the audio helped tie everything together for me.
Truly, enjoyed this!
Loved.
