About this listen

In the caves beneath an Italian lake, the fossil of a creature older than the Earth has been disinterred. In the Judaean desert, a legendary parchment has been discovered. One reveals the secrets of heaven. One foretells an impending hell. And deciphering their message has been left to paleontologist Carter Cox - a man of science whose faith in the empirical is about to be shaken by forces of evil beyond imagining.

So intelligently written

If I could've listened non stop I would have. I really enjoyed this author's writing style. So many layers yet not at all jumbled. This kept my attention from beginning to end and the narrator was great at changing his voice and accent for every character. Well done!

Loved it!

What made the experience of listening to Vigil the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed the writing and the story. It seemed to have a lot of different threads that had to come together, and that was a bit hard to keep track of at first, but once things began to tie together it was GREAT! The most memorable part for me was the scroll (no spoilers, but it gets very interesting towards the last 25% of the book.

Not Masello's best...

In a city of 11 million people, the development of the story line and the intersection of the characters’ lives are a little too convenient.
The most interesting part of the story was the open ended finale which left room for speculation.
Good narrator but attempts at accents were lacking.

Held my attention from beginning to end.

Narration was fabulous, I hung on every word. Absolutely spellbinding, much like "Rosemary's Baby". I think audio was an excellent way to enjoy this book.

Pretty cool story

I was intrigued by the description of this book and was not disappointed . Although not my usual fare, I really got into the story.
Kind of Dan Brown meets Ann Rice.
Tho not quite as well developed as a Brown or Rice, the author kept my interest throughout. Pretty cool story and a good start to an interesting and entertaining new series. I'm looking forward to the next book already :)

enjoyed

I enjoyed the story, but the ending left me wanting. It felt rushed. Too may unanswered questions.

Curiosity and Wonder

Not the same old angel/devil theme here. A puzzle to be solved both scholarly and archaeologically. Some times a little slow but well worth the wait. Well written and characters were well drawn. A good listen

Science Vs. Religion

How much of religion and folklore is based on scientific misunderstanding? How much of the unknown cannot be explained except by the use of religion? These are a couple of questions asked in this novel. No, it's not a dry examination of religion in todays world. This is a pretty crackerjack horror story. The premise is that an artifact is found predates not only humanity, but any known life on Earth. And what if it's not quite really dead?

This is a fun listen, well performed, with engaging characters and an interesting premise. Don't worry about the religion angle if that is scaring you, it is generally soft pedaled here and is more a plot device than a sermon.

It should be noted that the two main characters of Carter and Beth appear again in the sequel BESTIARY, Also a fun listen. Having now listened to both, I think that the author may be looking at a possible trilogy for these characters to complete their stories. I am up for that.

I recommend this novel.
