In the grip of a Siberian winter in 1902, a serial killer in Vienna embarks upon a bizarre campaign of murder. Vicious mutilation, a penchant for arcane symbols, and a seemingly random choice of victim are his most distinctive peculiarities. Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt summons a young disciple of Freud - his friend Dr. Max Liebermann - to assist him with the case. The investigation draws them into the sphere of Vienna's secret societies - a murky underworld of German literary scholars, race theorists, and scientists inspired by the new evolutionary theories coming out of England. At first, the killer's mind seems impenetrable - his behavior and cryptic clues impervious to psychoanalytic interpretation; however, gradually, it becomes apparent that an extraordinary and shocking rationale underlies his actions.

Wow I like this series
So I came across this material after accidentally watching the PBS series. I wanted to read the books and this second one has not disappointed. I appreciate the buddy relationship between the main characters and I also enjoy getting to know more about historical Vienna.

Another great mystery in this atmospheric series!
The Liebermann series are smart murder mysteries set in fin de siecle Vienna, and they're really, really good. A mix of a serial killer hunt plus real life people from the era = super cool stuff. PLUS Robert Fass is brilliant at narrating these. He's the perfect voice for them, both interesting and easy to listen to. I can't recall how I stumbled on this author, but I've read every single book in the series! :) Highly recommended!

Great recreation of a bygone era
This is way more than a murder mystery. The details, nuances, & social dynamics of final yrs of the Hapsburg empire add so much more to the story than I expected. The descriptions of the Viennese pastry are literally the icing on the cake.

Wonderful Book & series
The Max Lieberman books are wonderfully written & Dr Tallis’ characters all come to life. I’ve read the whole series & am only wishing for another. When I went to a music performance - while listening to this book - I found myself wondering if Max would like it. And, importantly, the narrator is spot-on perfect.
