Page Dickey
About this listen
“Uprooted reveals how a late-life uprooting changed Dickey as a gardener.” —The Wall Street Journal
When Page Dickey moved away from her celebrated garden at Duck Hill, she left a landscape she had spent thirty-four years making, nurturing, and loving. She found her next chapter in northwestern Connecticut, on 17 acres of rolling fields and woodland around a former Methodist church. In Uprooted, Dickey reflects on this transition and on what it means for a gardener to start again.
In these minutes, follow her journey: searching for a new home, discovering the ins and outs of the landscape surrounding her new garden, establishing the garden, and learning how to be a different kind of gardener. The surprise at the heart of the book? Although Dickey was sad to leave her beloved garden, she found herself thrilled to begin a new garden in a wilder, larger landscape.
Written with humor and elegance, Uprooted is an endearing story about transitions—and the satisfaction and joy that new horizons can bring.

Critic reviews
"Page Dickey’s quiet and contemplative journey from her iconic first garden, Duck Hill, to create something entirely new at Church House should be required reading for anyone seeking the courage to begin again or the inspiration to live within the spirit possessed by the land where one lives.” —Daniel J. Hinkley, gardener, plant explorer, and author of Windcliff
“An unfeigned account of a gardener’s transition in life and place. Wonderfully written, richly illustrated, grounded in personal, horticultural and cultural history. If you are wondering if classical horticulture and native plant functionality can coexist, this book is for you.” —Douglas W. Tallamy, author of Nature’s Best Hope and Bringing Nature Home
“In Uprooted, one of America’s most engaging garden writers discovers the role of the natural world—the soils, the plants, and the critters with which she shares her piece of New England paradise—in creating a garden that suits its place—and befits our time.” —Richard G. Story
It was June of 1869 when John Muir reluctantly accepted a job herding sheep from the central valley of California to the headwaters of the Merced and Tuolumne Rivers, high into the Sierra Nevadas and deep into the Yosemite region. He felt ill equipped for the work, and yet the opportunity thrilled his adventurous spirit. With a notebook tied to his belt, he set out for a summer he would never forget. My First Summer in the Sierra is Muir’s classic account of that extraordinary journey.

Story
Thoreau's classic account of the solitary life, describing his attempts to simplify his life and sort out his priorities by living alone in a cabin beside Walden Pond for nearly two years, is one of the most influential books ever written. The bible of the environmental movement, Walden vividly portrays Thoreau's reverence for nature, and his understanding of the idea that nature is made up of crucially interrelated parts.

Story
Long before the advent of conventional farming methods - which have focused on constant growth, human intervention, and genetic homogeneity - the apple had already grown to become the ubiquitous all-American symbol it is today. Known for their hardiness, ability to adapt to new environments, natural diversity, and plentiful bounty, wildly grown apples were once known as “America’s fruit” throughout the trading world.

Story
From the author of the acclaimed The Brother Gardeners, a fascinating look at the founding fathers from the unique and intimate perspective of their lives as gardeners, plantsmen, and farmers. For the founding fathers, gardening, agriculture, and botany were elemental passions, as deeply ingrained in their characters as their belief in liberty for the nation they were creating. These stories reveal a guiding but previously overlooked ideology of the American Revolution.

Outstanding Garden Story
For anyone who loves to read all the gritty and delightful details of starting a garden on a new
property, this is the story for you. I can find no negatives here. I felt as though I were walking along with the author as she first explored the land and then set about restoring it in a more natural way. It’s also a tale about scaling back on garden maintenance as one grows older. I can relate. And just a word about the narrator….exceptionally good. I would hope to find more narratives like like this one.
