About this listen

From the editor of the award-winning anthology Unfettered comes the newest installment in the science fiction and fantasy series, Unfettered III.

Lacking health insurance when he was diagnosed with cancer, Shawn Speakman asked friends in the science fiction and fantasy writing community to donate short stories he could use to counter mounting medical debt. The result was Unfettered, an anthology offering tales from some of the best authors working today.

Now, in Unfettered III, Speakman continues to pay forward the aid he received, raising money to combat medical debt for SF&F artists and authors. He has gathered together a great mix of new and favorite writers - free to write what they like - and the result is a powerful new anthology perfect for all listeners.

Be haunted by the chilling ghost story of Megan Lindholm. Revisit the Magicians world with Lev Grossman. Return to Osten Ard in an epic first look at Tad Williams’ Empire of Grass. Share a heartfelt story of loss and gain with Callie Bates. Cross the sands of the desert planet Dune with Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Travel the Ways in a new Wheel of Time novella with Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. Enter the amazing potter city of "Seven" with Naomi Novik. And many more stories, all wondrous!

Great!

A wonderful variety of authors and narrators. Makes me want to find Unfettered I and Unfettered II.

Good night great

I do not believe this one is as good as the other two for other mixed work that I’ve purchased in the past. Had trouble getting through some of the stories. Other ones were over way too quick. However if you write Wheel of time fan it’s worth the one story in the book.

Unfettered continues...

A smorgasbord of short stories from some the best fantasy writers, read by the best narrators. Some are pieces excluded from finished novels, some from upcoming novels, and some can be said to be stand-alone stories.

I was pleasantly surprised by this collection, and I think the authors take some competitive pride in offering up some of their top tier work. Some do stand out above the others, and each may have a slightly different audience, but they’re all deserving of being in this anthology.

For listeners, you’ll enjoy the variety and no doubt find a new author or book that you’ll want to wish list in the future. For writers, the learning experience from being exposed to all the different styles of writing adds even more value.

The feeling of being instantly transported back into The Last Battle from the Wheel Of Time is absolutely surreal.

The Paper Man story is another favorite of mine, and I’ll be using a credit soon to download Dune.

A must download for all sci-fi/fantasy fans.

collections are hard to critique

some of these stories are better than others, but I am interested in hearing/reading more about just about every story in this collection. Shawn Speakman's best Unfettered, yet. Hopefully he continues to collaborate with his colleagues to produce more of these.

Stories that stood out were authored by Brando Sando (Wie üblich) with his cut sequence on how Perrin did some super awesome stuff.

Shawn Speakman's Unfetteree Knight is one aibreally want to read I. full, and well, there were a bunch. took my likeb3 weeks to listen to this one all the way as I was working from home and had no commute, so I honestly can't remember all of them. but it was much better in total than the other 2 collections, in my honest opinion.

Another brilliant anthology!

As with all anthologies, some of these appealed to me while others did not.

First, let's get out of the way the simple fact that every narrator involved with the project is amazing! I couldn't have asked for better.

Now, as with previous volumes of Unfettered, I read it primarily for Brandon Sanderson's entry as I'm A Wheel of Time junkie.

That being said, I'm not normally a fan of short stories, but there were several noteworthy gems here.

First, since reading 2/3 of the Sword of Shannara some years ago I have actively avoided Terry Brooks. Nothing about it really interested me.

So imagine my surprise when I find a prequel story to it here about Alenon and discover that I actually really enjoyed not only the story but also the writing itself and the voice. I'll definitely be giving Brooks another chance in the near future!

Tad Williams has been on my radar for a long time, but after reading this story I'll definitely be moving him up on my tbr.

Naomi Novik is another one whose books have been on my agenda for a while. The fantasy element of this story is quite subtle, but having lost my own mother to cancer, it deals with a subject that is very close to my heart and does so in such a touchingly beautiful and poignant way, I couldn't help but love the story. Her books are definitely being moved up on my tbr as well.

Ramon Terrell is an author I had never heard of before, and after this sampling of his writing I can't understand why!

The story was a little strange, with a multi dimensional sword and travel as well as some pretty unusual creatures, but it all came together nicely and he writes in an incredibly compelling voice and style!

It's unfortunate that he doesn't have audio versions of his books, but I've already picked up his latest novel.

Jason Denzel is another that I had never heard of but will definitely be looking into his other work.

And finally, of course the bonus Dune story by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson was fantastic. Some really great back story there about the Sardakar and Selucia Secunda.

In the end, I would say that this anthology has something to offer every fantasy fan, and you never know, you just might discover your new favorite author herein.

Great fantasy in short forms!

This is a great bit of fantasy! You may not like everything in this anthology, as I have my favorites and a few that aren’t my normal bit of reading. However, the majority fits in with any who love the genre.

It’s well worth your time, regardless of where you fall on the spectrum!

Great if your looking for a new author.

I liked most of the stories and found some new authors and universes to explore. I believe the poor reviews may be based upon the diversity, lack of character development and the fact you get just enough story to get into it then it's over (Literary blue balls). If you can embrace the reason for these collections and accept the fact you will jump into extensive prexisting story arcs sometimes then these are great.
