About this listen

Tessa Taylor arrives in 1870s Upper Peninsula, Michigan, planning to serve as a new teacher to the town. Much to her dismay, however, she immediately learns that there was a mistake, that the town had requested a male teacher. Percival Updegraff, superintendent and chief mine clerk, says she can stay through winter since they won't be able to locate a new teacher before then, and Tessa can't help but say she is in his debt. Little does she know that Percival will indeed keep track of all that she owes him.

Determined to become indispensable, Tessa throws herself into teaching, and soon the children of the widowed lighthouse keeper have decided she's the right match for their grieving father. Their uncle and assistant light keeper, Alex Bjorklund, has his own feelings for Tessa. As the two brothers begin competing for her hand, Tessa increasingly feels that someone is tracking her every move, and she may not be able to escape the trap that has been laid for her.

Lacking romance

I liked this book as it had a good amount suspense. For me the romance element was lacking compared to the first 2 books in this series. There was a love triangle, I really don't like love triangles.

Loved it

Hated the "self ordained" king. This gave me the motivation to keep reading the book. I just knew that he would get his come-uppance eventually.

Undaunted Hope

Jody Hedland 3rd book with the setting of lighthouses did not disappoint, however the narrator did with her whiney voice in a negative narrative.

God Story, Distracting Reader

I liked the story and the notes at the end, but the reader was distracting for me. There are readers who speak/read easily, but this one had some reading habits that were like nails on a chalkboard for me.

Another very good book in the series

This is the fourth book in the series that I have listened to and am quite pleased with the narrator and the stories. Set along the shores of the Great Lakes during the late 1800s/early 1900s, this series is rich in history, hardship and faith.

In this particular story, a young woman seeks a fresh start in a new town, but she has no desire to be in involved with either of the two brothers who care for the lighthouse. The story had a bit too much angst and misunderstanding, but in the end love, justice and faith win out. Enjoyable series by Ms. Hedlund.

Awful narrator

I have to agree with the other reviews. This narrator does awful men’s voices. And her lack of interesting narrative makes the story quite dull. It ruins it honestly. The story itself is good, and I love Jody Hedlund books. But this narrator is awful

I really don't like narrator

I like the story but the narrator sounds like she's reading a children's novel. I really wish this narrator would only read children's books. after a couple of chapters I almost stopped listening but I listened to the whole story and it is a good story.

Great story line.

Enjoyed the last book in this series. Storyline was interesting. Narration was a distraction with exaggerated pronunciation of final syllables in words.

Whirlwind of emotions

This story covered a whole gamut of emotions. I thought the author did a terrific job of endearing me to an entire town. I cared deeply for every member of the town, adults and children alike. And then I especially loved the myriad of facts, from the Author's Notes, that this story was fashioned from.
I thought the narrator did a wonderful job as well.
However, there are some difficult aspects to the (hi)story that make me very uncomfortable. Though I appreciate that they are alluded to instead of described in detail, they still left a churning lingering in my gut.
