About this listen

By the close of the 20th century, China had gathered secret information concerning United States military surveillance and guided-missile technology. Now, in 2005, the technology is in production in China's new breed of submarine-based, long-range missiles. The dragon has stirred. Admiral Arnold Morgan, the President's National Security Adviser, cannot sit back and wait for China to perfect their new ballistic weapon. Instead, he dispatches the most lethal hunter-killer submarine in the fleet, U.S.S. Seawolf, deep into the China Sea. Seawolf eludes the Chinese until a catastrophic accident suddenly puts the U.S. submarine at their mercy. The crew vanishes, plainly captive. At the risk of starting World War III, Admiral Morgan orders in the elite Navy SEALs to rescue the Americans at all cost. Under cover of darkness, the SEALs move into the forbidden waters of South China Sea. Their orders are brutal: whatever it takes. Failure, unthinkable.©2000 by Patrick Robinson; 2000 Danilo Ducek (P)2000 HarperCollins Publishers Inc. Not very plausible

This story does not have very much to it. The level of detail and the plausibility is just not very good.
The performance was very good. If it was not for the performance, I would've stopped listening halfway into the book and would not have missed a thing.

Excellent...Powerful..Tearful..Edge of Chair

So very good... so tearful ( I am a very proud Army wife for 21 yrs). I first chose to listen because of the narrator, David McCullum💕, but he truly made the book more believable, this could happen to any one who serves this great country...how often has an honorable service person been “thrown under the bus” because of a grieving parent who has power or money. The ending was truly a sad shock..but how many times has that happened... SO POWERFUL

Good Story

This story could have been much better if you had added another six hours to it. All the other stories in this series has been great not so much with this one.

good but not in the same vein as the earlier works

I've listened to all of the Patrick Robinson books and this one is a little light for me while it has the same genre I like the story is a little light compared to his previous works

Terrible

What would have made U.S.S. Seawolf better?

Different narrator.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Not a bad twist. Helped make an otherwise awful story more paletable.

Would you be willing to try another one of David McCallum’s performances?

With the right story (British spy novel), yes.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment.

Any additional comments?

When I once served in submarines movies were the mainstay of entertainment. Often times the movies brought aboard were the leftovers not selected by other deployed boats. But once started you had to suffer through the really awful ones lest you be ridiculed as a "non hacker." Catcalls during these flick ofter heard were "punch my hacker card!" Another favorite was "this is a three fingered gager." I offer this background to explain why I finished this book. I had to get my hacker card punched once again. The most obvious flaw was David McCullum attempting to mould his British accent into Chineese, or that of a cigar smoking American admiral. It didn't work. In fact, it didn't work so badly that it became my quest to suffer through to the end. I like David as an actor and enjoy his skills but he didn't fit this at all. The story itself was OK, not great, not very authentic, but OK....assuming that you can suspend belief easily. Anyway, this is just terrible and I was very disappointed. Still, it has been a long time since I suffered a 3 fingered gager and got my hacker card punched. So, from that standpoint, I'm glad I finished it. To those of you who quit half way through, you are just a bunch on non hackers.
