About this listen

Amber is the werebear daughter to the chief of her clan. She is considered the clan's princess and has already been promised to Koda another werebear in her clan who is next in line to be chief. Amber is against her father's archaic ideologies, and she constantly rebels against his rules and sneaks away. On the night she went for a run, she comes upon a river and encounters an awfully friendly cougar who she just thinks is a sweet kitty.

Mark is a widowed werecougar who lives alone. His only companion is his best friend, werebear Danny.

The two have been by each other's sides for centuries, always looking out for one another like brothers. Mark is riddled with grief and sadness over the murder of his wife and children over two centuries ago. He's never allowed himself to move on or feel anything for anybody until one day, while at his river, he comes face to face with a bear.

For almost 200 years, I’ve kept to myself. And then there she was.

They might be from different species, but they prove that nothing can keep you apart from your fated mate.

Will she leave her clan and her betrothed to be loved by her werecougar forever?

Twin Flames

Okay, this was a really cute story. lol I love that ending. There are fullness and babies 👶. I'm just so glad they all worked it out and got what they all wanted. I do wish this was a duet or read by a girl. Don't get me wrong, the narrator did a good job, but his girl voice wasn't so good lol.

Good Mixed Shifter Romance

This is an interesting mixed shifter paranormal romance. The storyline is solid if not a bit simple, lacking some of the depth or complexity that one comes to expect from a mixed relationship.

Short and full of action

This audio was short and full of action. Mated of different species find each other.

There is no real “bad guy” apart from the hunters.
I liked the secondary characters and world building was ok.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the narration but it wasn’t awful, more the quality of the audio than the voice.

To me this was a take it or leave it story, you may like it more than me …. As I said to me it was average.

Mark and Amber's Story

Mark is a cougar shifter that is still grieving over the murder of his wife and kids centuries ago. Then he ends up meeting Amber out by the lake. He is hidden in the brush, but he knows that she is aware he is there and seems to enjoy his watching her. Amber is the werebear princess whose father set up an arranged marriage with Koda, next in line to be Chief of the Clan, in order to strengthen the Clan. Koda and Amber are more like brother and sister, however, so she is not happy about the arrangement. She just doesn’t love him, and she wants a mate she can love and who will love her also. She wanders away and meets a friendly cougar. Are the two of them fated to be together? And how would she get out of being promised to Koda?

The audiobook narrator is Eric Nash. He does a great job with the voices with great intonation to make it easy for the listener to get an accurate idea of what each character is like. It helps to set the mood and is an enjoyable way to “read” and enjoy the book.

Twin Flames!

This is a short and quick read, or in my case, listen. It is a good story about Amber and Mark. She is a werebear and the daughter of the clans chief. She has been promised by her father to Koda, another werebear in their clan. Mark is a werecougar that has been morning, for a very long time, the loss of his wife and children. Amber and Mark meet and feelings develop between them. This is a good story that the narrator did a good job with reading. I love the characters and the plot is interesting and enjoyable.

First in a Romantic Shifter Series

I enjoyed this story and the world the author created! It has shifters, hunters, and romance!
Amber is such a strong character. I loved her from her first introduction because she does everything so fearlessly with an enviable confidence. She tries to take control of her destiny even if it means going against her father. Her and Mark together were honestly my favorite. I loved how Mark made her feel and his genuine interest in her...unlike Koda.
Mark was an interesting character. He's lived mostly alone in the woods apart from his cat and his best friend Danny. He's had a somewhat rough life, but he's willing to take a chance on Amber even if it means pestering an angry bear clan.
I liked Koda's character development! He has so much growth that takes place...after I first wrote him off as an idiot. I hope he gets his own story.
I love Luna!! She's such a great cat. She's a fun addition to make Mark all the more enticing.
The drama (apart from the hunter business) seemed a bit forced and a little on the childish side which didn't appeal to me because these characters are supposedly quite old. But it doesn't ruin the story, it's just annoying.
The narrator does a good job being articulate, though sometimes the female voices get lost with the male ones. Otherwise, it's well done and I liked his style!

All in all, it's an enjoyable read/listen with a lovely story and likable characters! Perfect for someone looking for a romantic (with some steam) shifter read/listen!!.

Entertaining

This was an entertaining read. The character work was well written and the story line was engaging. While I enjoyed the voice of the narrator, the reading was slower than I normally like, however all in all a great job was done by both narrator and author. This book was as quick and easy to listen to as it was to read.

Not for me, but maybe for you? (Good writing & narration)

First I need to say I got this audiobook in a free code for review situation, I love paranormal romance stories, and the premise sounded intriguing. After listening to it, I have to admit if I had known it was going to go the route it did I probably wouldn’t have picked it up under normal circumstances. (I’ll put why, with spoiler markers below.)

The narrator took a little getting used to; he has a very nice, deep voice that is soothing to listen to but his pacing is a little slower than I would normally prefer. There were also quite a few instances where it wasn’t clear that the point of view had switched characters which made it extremely confusing because he doesn’t change his voice/tone unless he’s using a voice for a character, like a surfer dude for the best friend Danny, or a rather petulant tone for the FMC, Amber. But all internal dialogue and regular narration sounds the same.

Narration aside… There was a third POV thrown in that muddled the story; you have the FMC, Amber, and the MMC, Mark, but then you also have Amber’s betrothed that she doesn’t love, Koda, at random times and it really threw me off. A lot of his internal dialogue in the beginning is really gross, misogynistic “I want to own her, she’ll fall in line” ick, and I guess it serves to solidify why Amber doesn’t want to be with him but as the story progresses you get less of his POV and although he gets less awful I just don’t know that it was necessary to hear his side?

(Big spoilers below this point)
.
.
.
Also, Amber is all over the place, and at first I thought maybe it was the narrator just making her sound more petulant than she really is, especially with her father being the overprotective and controlling jerk that he was up until like ten minutes before he died, but later in the story when she makes assumptions about Mark and then ghosts him, even considers marrying Koda when she finds out she’s pregnant (and doesn’t think she wants to tell Mark!) it’s clear she’s actually petulant and pretty selfish. And this is why I probably wouldn’t have picked this story up had I known it was going to go the pregnancy route. I find more often than not when the FMC gets pregnant, they act extremely selfishly and I just … can’t relate? Don’t find that enjoyable? Both. Idk. I find that pregnancy often ruins the story for me in some way. This was how this time. Mark does and says ALL the right things; confesses his love, dotes on her, spills his guts about his dead wife and children, protects the territory that he is told he’s not welcome on, takes care of the hunters that killed her father, was even willing to let her go if that would make her happy — all before even knowing she was pregnant. And she still treats him like a heel. Yes, they get back together and he continues to dote on her and then the children in the epilogue but the whole time I’m like wow, she does… not deserve him. :/

But! The writing was really good, I would probably read something by Valerie Moon again if it didn’t have the pregnancy angle. I would listen to this narrator again too! It just wasn’t a story for me… but maybe it is for you!

Relatable Characters

Filled with relatable and likable characters it was easy to empathize with them. This had a great storyline that follows an adventure filled with steam, love, loss, an so much more. The narration is easy to understand and it easy to listen to. The story overall ends on an HEA but leaves room for the other characters' stories.
