Esme er nysgerrig, Esme er stædig, Esme er modig, Esme er nyhedsreporter - altid på jagt efter en god historie til skolebladets forside - og Esme er Igors kusine. Igor er klog, Igor er doven, Igor er lidt forsigtig, men Igor kan ikke sige nej til sin kusine, Esme.
Esme og Igor 1:
Tredje time efter midnat. Vinder af Gyldendals store børnekrimikonkurrence. På vej hjem fra skole finder Esme og Igor tilfældigvis en stor sportstaske med en dyr og flot rollespilsdragt, som mærkeligt nok er smidt i en affaldscontainer. De forsøger at aflever tasken til ejeren, men han vil under ingen omstændigheder have tasken tilbage. Det er kun den første af mange mærkelige ting, der sker i de dage omkring Øgadekvarteret i Århus. Men hvis Esme ikke var så nysgerrig, var de nu nok ikke blevet rodet ind i en uhyggelig kidnapningsaffære, og Igor kunne have hygget sig på sit værelse med sin computer. Men så havde de selvfølgelig heller ikke fået verdens bedste forside til Øgadens Skoleblad.
Første bind i serien om Esme og Igor vandt Gyldendals store krimikonkurrence. Juryen sagde blandt andet: "Man føler sig godt underholdt og i godt selskab med Esme og Igor, hvis fremtidige eventyr synes at være i gode hænder hos en fantasifuld og stilsikker forfatter, som i dette første bind afslører et sikkert greb om genren med de nødvendige strejf af fornyelse."
