About this listen

A new novel by bestselling author Nicholson Baker reintroduces feckless but hopeful hero Paul Chowder, whose struggle to get his life together is reflected in his steadfast desire to write a pop song, or a protest song, or both at once.

Critic reviews

"The comfortable conversational style Baker uses is the perfect vehicle for his free-flowing prose in this trip through Chowder's psyche as he turns 55, analyzes his existence, and attempts to set a meaningful path forward.... Baker's understated emotional range is effective at delivering both the intimacy of Chowder's inner struggles and his self-deprecating chuckles at his awkward attempts to be cool. This is a stellar example of an author successfully narrating his own work." (AudioFile Magazine)

"In sparkling and witty prose, Baker reminds readers why he's one of the masters of the contemporary novel." (Kirkus Reviews)

Nobody writes like Nick Baker writes

Nicholson Baker is an unusually adroit wordsmith, with marvelous observational, storytelling, and weirdly wonderful point-making skills. (I own more novels by Baker than any author but Faulkner.) He never disappoints (me)! It's a 'quiet' love story, with quiet self-discovery, read in his quiet and calming voice, full of quiet & enjoyable surprises. Occasional facts, impressions, connections regarding composer Claude Debussy and his moody "The Sunken Cathedral" were welcome moments, and this unassuming novel does indeed share a mysterious, contemplative mood with that piece. And the machine of the title? I've never seen a traveling sprinkler, but they exist: naturally, this item, too, drops in and out of this serene novel.

No One Brings The Everyday To Life...

like Baker. Once again into the surprisingly fascinating mind of Everyman. A wonderful read if you loved The Mezzanine
